Il gatto a nove code (1971)
This is a decent mystery film. Very Stylish with plenty of red herrings although the plot ending is a bit of a let down. The start of the movie is gripping and Karl Malden and the little girl are great. Well worth catching if you like Italian Mystery/Giallo films. The murders are restrained but there is plenty of tension. Hitchcock would be proud of this especially the opening set up. Blind man who used to be a reporter - gets the bit between his teeth. There is probably something lacking when comparing it to other Argento Giallo films like Bird with the Chrystal Plummage or Deep Red but compares favourably with most other films of its type.
Basically a dark comedy - overall too routine though
Anybody shocked by this film should have known by the description of it not to watch it. The only real shock in this film is the idea - this may be disgusting but after that the film is pretty restrained in its violence and gore. Thankfully so - I would much rather watch this than any of the SAW films or other copycats. This film had some good elements already stated in other reviews - the Dr. is fantastic - really over the top creepy. His ineptness at putting the cops off the scent is hilarious as he's so devoid of emotion that he can't be bothered coming up with any decent excuses. It's not it's shock value or boundary pushing ideas - but actually the main problem is that the film is for the most part a routine madman captures young girls, who try to escape type story. Corny as some of this is - I did laugh out loud a few times - the idea is preposterous - why are people so offended? But it definitely held the interest. Any serious horror fans need to see it but basically - take away the idea and the rest is pretty routine. I don't think a sequel would be well advised as the idea is already out there and stretched to 90 mins, another film would need something a lot different.
