Lists by Munin75
I hadn't realized it until I started making this list, but the 1990s actually has a good number of very good sci-fi films. I find the 90s both continue the style and legacy of old school 80s sci-fi films (Terminator 2, Total Recall, Starship Troopers...), and start the modern style that we know today (Jurassic Park, The Matrix, Men in Black...). In that aspect, the 90s are an intermediate between the styles of the 80s and the modern style of the 21rst century. It still holds up as a decade with some of the greats in sci-fi.
Let me add that I don't think The Truman Show is sci-fi enough, but if I did it would have made the top 5 in this list.
I tried to organize the list in order of preference but it's particularly hard. The top 3 are the only ones I'm sure of for the order, the top 10 in this list would be my final top 10, but apart from that I'm not really set for the order.
My personal favorites of the 2000-2009 years. I'm a great SF fan, and wanted to make an all-time list but its too difficult for now, so I'm starting easy with this decade which is hardly the greatest for the genre. Note that I don't consider Donnie Darko, 28 Days Later and The Man From Earth as Sci-fi, but they would be high in my top 20 if I did.
The only films which would probably be in an all-time list of mine are the first two, the others I found good because they were either interesting/original, or simply fun/entertaining (which is the least I can hope for). I tried to list the movies in order of preference, but after the first ten it was difficult so don't consider it canon. The rest is more like honorable mentions. Thanks for your interest!
Inspired and taught from the best of the late 60s and 70s, and fresh with young visionary directors and new technological possibilities, the 80s were great years for science-fiction films, from horror sci-fi to sci-fi comedy, spawning many of the most unforgettable classics including films which I would include in my top 10 favorites of all time, all genres included (the first three in this list).
I've tried ordering the list in order of preference. I haven't seen all 80s sci-fi films, including the Star Trek films. I've seen the Mad Max films but it was too long ago for me to remember them correctly. I might update this list once I see those I missed, or include those that I may have forgotten.
These are my top 15 movies of all time, the first being my official all time favorite, the rest is in order of release date. I don't include films younger than 10 years old because a film needs time to grow on you.
