Gin gwai (2002)
Although quite reminiscent of "The Sixth Sense", this amazing thriller stands on its own, rising above and beyond the now unoriginal ideas first presented in that late summer blockbuster.
"The Eye" has a style all its own, especially when dealing with a story that seems like you have probably seen a million times. ("The Eyes of Laura Mars" cries out for some reason, although it has been many years since I have seen it.) The filmmakers have created an atmosphere that is creepy, unsettling, and often, downright scary. Added to that is a chilling score which provides the icing on the cinematic cake.
POSSIBLE SPOILER: While there is no "surprise ending", like those that have seemingly become required for American films, the climax is nevertheless explosive, reinforcing everything that has preceeded it. And the "epilogue" seems perfectly natural, finishing things off in a very satisfying fashion.
I am probably not properly expressing how much I enjoyed "The Eye". I just hope that it is not re-made in the United States like every effective foreign film seems to be. But wait... there are already others like it; funny how none of them even compare!
