Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Moving, powerful, original and funny
'Little miss Sunshine' is a classic dramatic comedy about a family struggling to get along as they should do, but despite what some people say it IS original. It goes much deeper they most films like this do, and you develop a liking for all the unusual characters. Everyone in this film has their issues. Frank has just survived a suicide attempt after suffering a unrequited love affair, Dwayne is a depressed teenager only interested in achieving his dream of becoming a pilot, Olive a seven-year-old dreaming of becoming a beauty queen even though she is not one, Grandpa a heroin addict, Richard a failed business man with an obsession for winning, and Sheryl who only wants her family to be happy.
'Little miss Sunshine' has brilliant, strong performances from all its actors, and completely deserved to win the Oscar for best screenplay. It is a great, funny, sad and very moving film everyone should be able to relate to in some sort of way. Seriously don't listen to the people who are unable to see the beauty of this film, it's powerful and may just be able to change your view on the world. Okay, that may be going it bit far, but it will i'm sure make your feel better about your own issues, as it did for me. You'll be moved. See it!
Please don't see this film
My friend and i walked into the cinema and just managed to catch a screening of 'duplicity'. What seemed like 4 hours later, we walked out of the cinema both furious at ourselves for wasting so much time and money on such a terrible movie! The story line of this is incredibly weak and never takes off, the actors (both i previously liked, for movies like 'pretty woman' and 'inside man') were made to look like they could have been razzie winners.
By the end me and my friend were begging for it to finish, the only thing we got out of it was a bit of a laugh at how crap it was. The 'i love you' confession at the airport has to be some of the worst movie dialogue i've ever heard, if you thought Julia Roberts 'confession' was bad, you really won't want to listen to Clive Owen's.
Just please don't see this, i can think a million better things you could pass time with, ANYTHING is better than this. It's 125 minutes of my life i'll never get back!
A masterpiece you won't forget
Joel (Jim Carey) and Clementine's (Kate Winslet) romance comes to an abrupt end after their two-year relationship turns sour. But they haven't had a usual break-up, because Joel soon discovers that Clementine has had him erased from her memory. Devastated when he finds out, Joel decides to have Clementine erased, too only to realise too late that he doesn't want to forget her. 'Eternal sunshine' is a film that demands second-time viewing. The beginning starts at the end, when the opening credits roll 15 minutes later Joel is in a flood of tears having just discovered that Clementine has erased him. Clem and Joel's relationship is shown in broken-up memories of fierce arguments and loving moments. It follows a moral meaning about relationships and that although they have their tough moments where you wish you'd never met, you really do love them despite it all. Jim Carey's performance in this proves that he is not just a comedy actor like some people think, but can actually do really brilliant performances in serious roles. Kate Winslet was Oscar nominated for this, but it really should have been a win as she plays the impulsive, fun, emotional Clementine flawlessly. The Oscar this movie did win was best screenplay which was completely deserved because although it is extremely complicated on first-time viewing. You soon figure it all out and it all makes perfect sense. 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind' cannot be missed; it is truly a masterpiece you won't forget. It is a film about relationships shown in a very different way, but despite what some people say it is not only for people who can relate, it is a film that will appeal to lots of teenagers as I have proved. A definite must-see!!!
Benny & Joon (1993)
A film that will make you smile
I saw 'Benny and Joon' almost completely by accident, since I'd never heard of this film before. And I didn't have too high expectations, so I couldn't have been more shocked by how much I loved this movie. Having rented it, I went straight out to buy it and have seen it tons of times and still can't get enough.
This is the most original storyline I've ever seen and really, really works. Joon, is mentally ill and has been in the care of her older brother since their parents died 12 years before. But just as he is beginning to worry about her safety after she kicks out yet another one of her housekeepers Joon loses at a poker game where one of Benny's friends has bet his irritating cousin. In comes Sam, a kind, sweet and extremely eccentric man and both their lives are changed in ways they couldn't have ever imagined.
To me 'Benny and Joon' is a great movie for lots of reasons. The characters in this (partially Depp's 'Sam') are among the most likable characters in any film I've seen. All three of the main stars I think did I wonderful job in this. The relationship between Sam and Joon was just lovely, and despite Joon's mentally health, what kind of girl wouldn't want to be her just so you can kiss and cuddle Johnny Depp? With brilliant performances, a beautiful romance, laugh-out-loud comedy, heart wrenching drama, wonderful weirdness and a film that is granted to make you smile no matter what kind of day you've had. What's not to like?
Back to the Future (1985)
Quite possibly one of the best movies ever made
I first saw 'back to the future' with my dad when I was about seven years old. Now over eight years later I have seen the film hundreds of times and it is still one of my favourite movies.
The film tells a simple story of teenager Marty (perfectly acted by Michael J Fox) who is accidentally sent back thirty years in time to when his parents were teenagers. His only hope of returning to his life in 1985 is his scientist friend 'Doc' Brown (also perfectly acted by Christopher Lloyd). In the meantime his teenage mother has formed a crush on him after he saved his father and again accidentally ruining what should have been the start of their relationship.
If you haven't yet seen this movie 'WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???' The acting and casting is perfect, the directing, the special effects, absolutely everything in this movie is perfect. One of the funniest, most watchable movies ever created.
