Past Lives (2023)

A beautiful, subtle, non-conflicting story
21 December 2023
What a fantastic movie!

It starts with a great opening scene and what follows is a beautiful, subtle, non-conflicting story about immigration and the never dying love and friendship between Nora and Hae Sung, and the way the husband handled the whole situation. Leaving her room and giving her support, all while not hiding he's afraid.

Respectful, painful, understanding, emotional, real!

The third act is just so good!

The bar scene feels intimate and honest, with a tense atmosphere at the same time, as the husband gets cut out of the conversation and eventually the whole frame.

The ending made me raise the score a bit more.

That Uber scene (the location, the colors, the lighting, the stare, the silence, the talk, the flashback, ...) is perfection. Followed by the walk and ending with the breakdown... This hit hard and is one of those movies that will stick with me for a long time... Wow and auch!

Brutal and impactful
28 October 2023
What a fantastic horror movie!

It's visually beautiful, well performed, and has a pretty unique story.

An excellent mix of slower, very atmospheric, creepy scenes with great tension and suspense building, as well as very brutal and shocking moments.

Those brutal scenes are some of the most impactful I've ever seen.

Just the right amount at the right times and some of them are very unexpected. Those goat and dog scenes... Damn, son!

It starts off very mysterious, stays vague for a while with pieces of the puzzle revealed as the story progresses.

Nobody gets spared and I loved it!

Dark, sad, and hopeless throughout.

An amazing horror film!

Intriguing story with an epic finale
10 July 2023
This was fun!

There's a lot of explanation to do in the beginning, and because of that, it has a somewhat slower start, but never boring.

It's an intriguing story and a great mission with very tense moments, still with some room left for humorous moments (e.g. The Fiat 500 scene).

I have seen more impressive action/fight sequences in previous M:I movies, but the epic train finale makes up for it a lot!

The team is still great. Rebecca Ferguson is always a treat to watch, and with the addition of Hayley Atwell, the team becomes even better. She delivers an excellent performance and has a great screen presence!

Cinematography, especially the Venice night scenes, and score were once again on point.

Looking forward to part two!

Very entertaing, but misses some of the magic
28 June 2023
The Dial of Destiny starts off great and we get into the action right away.

The story loses some momentum for about 40 minutes after the opening.

The last 1,5 hour is fun, reminiscent of old school Indy adventures (think cave, creatures, secret entrance, ...) and a crazy third act.

Harrison Ford gives an excellent performance. Touching even.

Phoebe Mary Waller-Bridge is good, but lacked a genuine emotional connection between her character and Indy both in the story and her portrayal.

Overall, I was very entertained, but not blown away.

While The Dial of Destiny is visually stunning, it misses some of the magic from the older Indiana Jones movies.

Still got goosebumps with every iconic 🎶tadada dááá! Tada dááá!...🎶

Asteroid City (2023)

A feast for the eyes
15 June 2023
I really looked forward to Asteroid City from the day it was announced, and it didn't disappoint.

In typical Wes Anderson style, this movie looks fantastic with great attention to detail the set dressing and wonderful colors.

Just like The Grand Budapest Hotel, it is a feast for the eyes!

The story has a lot of subtle, quirky humor and it hits just the right spot every time.

It is a story within a story, and I just wish the whole movie was set in Asteroid City instead of going back and forth between behind the scenes and what was happening there.

The breaks and changes in style weren't always a hit for me, and I found myself hoping to return to the desert city asap...

And the performances... Those were terrific by all! What a cast!

Left the theater with a smile on my face!

Fun, charming and heartwarming
7 April 2023
I had a big smile on my face from the beginning until the end with some lump in the throat moments in between.

This is such a fun, charming and heartwarming movie!

The editing is fantastic and it is beautifully shot.

It's very crisp and colorful.

Both Vivian Oparah and David Jonsson are so good!

Their performances are great and they have fantastic charisma and chemistry between them!

It has a tight 80-minute runtime full of energy.

It all felt so natural.

This is a very impressive directorial debut by Raine Allen-Miller's! 👏

I enjoyed every minute of it!

This my Cha Cha Real Smooth of 2023.

The Oak Room (2020)

Excellent slow burn thriller
19 July 2022
Came across 'The Oak Room' while browsing the Prime catalogue.

Never heard of it before, so I went in blind hoping for the best...

This is very nice slow burn thriller with a very limited cast and which is set in limited locations (2 bars) during a snow storm at night.

It takes its time to build the atmosphere to a point that it becomes really unsettling.

This movie relies on storytelling and does this very well.

The stories that are told and the conversations are gripping and thought provoking. You need to pay attention to the details, because these details will help you to understand the ending.

Really enjoyed RJ Mitte's (aka Walter White JR) performance!

Probably not for everyone, but if you enjoy a slow burn thriller where words/stories are more important than action, maybe you should give 'The Oak Room' a chance... I'm glad I did.

Intense and disturbing
19 June 2022
This was a very compelling and intense watch!

Mainly because this documentary was made with only authentic news fragments, press footage and police communication without any narration.

The disgusting behavior of the press and the public and the amateurish way the police handled this situation made my blood boil.

Those interactions with the hostage takers and hostages were so bizarre to see... You learn to know the hostages, feel for them and hope for a good outcome. Even though you know it won't end well for everyone involved.

It all felt a bit too real (?)... :s Very disturbing!

This one will stick with me for a while... definitely worth watching!

Beautiful and heartwarming
18 June 2022
This is such a beautiful and heartwarming story!

It was a joy to see how the relationships between all the different characters developed.

It made me smile, made me laugh out loud and made me tear up... It is cheesy at times, but that didn't bother me a bit.

I'm a sucker for these kind of movies. 🤷‍♂️ That chemistry between Dakota Johnson and Cooper Raiff...Wow!

Great performances by all.

8,5/10.

Intense and nerve wrecking

This a fantastic drama!

Intense and nerve wrecking.

It's a one-shot movie and this concept makes Boiling Point very dynamic and engaging. It really draws you in. It felt like I was in that kitchen.

Great camerawork and brilliant performances by Stephen Graham and the rest of the cast!

Unique storytelling and an unpredictable storyline.
16 January 2022
Searching is an amazing mystery thriller with unique storytelling and an unpredictable storyline.

Almost the whole story is told trough a computer screen and it's brilliantly done! The way we can see the dad searching for and finding clues is engaging and tense.

Great performances as well.

Ok, but forgettable movie
4 January 2022
Liam Neeson and a kid on the run from the cartel.

With a premise like this, I expected suspense, tension and action.

Unfortunately, there is never much of any of this... In reality it's a slow paced drama, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, if only it didn't dragged as much (in the middle) as The Marksman did.

This is an ok, but forgettable movie.

An enjoyable revenge movie
1 January 2022
An enjoyable revenge movie.

It's a simple story, made more interesting with the use of flashbacks, which worked very well imo and the action, mostly gun fights, was fun to watch.

Statham was very good. I really enjoyed his calm/cool/collected performance!

This is just good entertainment!

Brilliant Satire
28 December 2021
This is a brilliant satire about the current state of politics, the media and the stupidity of the human race in general.

Great cast, good story and really funny!

A different kind of "End of the world" movie and I loved it!

And please wait for the closing credits to end! You might miss some funny scenes if you don't...

Fun and well written murder mystery.
7 October 2021
A fun and well written murder mystery.

No boring moments and lot of twists. And once you think you have it al figured out there's another twist.

Acting was good and although It didn't bother me much, I feel Daniel Craig's Southern accent was unnecessary.
