Living (2022)
A Memorable Film
Huge chunks of certain films stay with you years after you watch them. Tender Mercies springs to mind. Fully character driven with a simple story line. This is one of them. A stunning performance by Nighy worth of an Oscar. The metamorphosis of a stoic man who realises he lost the thread of living a long time ago and has only months to live shows all of us that change is possible, even very late in life.
If you want whiz bang, this isn't for you London 1953 springs to life, and as a kid I remember the bowler hatted office workers in their pin stripe suits and brollys on the trains with their faces in the morning papers. And marching across the road at their destination and disappearing into bulddings to be seen leaving them at 5.
Paranoid (2016)
Atrocious
After viewing the first episode, I had to watch the next to see if there was anything that might improve over the first. Let's start with the script. Sloppy to say the least, using the usual frailties of the characters to fill in the lack of depth to the story. Incestious character involvement (too many coincidents) has ruined many a show, and this does it with gusto. The actors. My god how can so many in a cast be so awful. I almost felt sorry for the over-the-top Indira Varma, Robert Glenister, Neil Stuke, but definitely did for Polly Walker and Kevin Doyle, and whoever the psychiatrist was. Yes, I plodded on mesmerised by this car-wreck of a series. It finishes as it starts, unfortunately.
Redfern Now (2012)
Well done
Those expecting bushmen, or didgeridoo, will be very disappointed. Those that don't are in for a treat. The show takes place in Redfern, a poorer part of Sydney, where hundreds of years of intermarriage has made for a lighter skin people, who for whatever reason still are blackfellas in a whitefella world. It's a fine balancing act, brought off with skillful portrayals in the series. Don't expect car chase shoot-um-up action.
Excellent acting with story lines that weave between a number of families who come and go throughout the series. This drama series won numerous Australian awards, and had very favourable reviews by the general Australian population.
