Powrót wilczycy (1990)
The first part of the movie ("Wilczyca") wasn't so bad, although it was surely not a masterpiece neither. But this one is so unbelievably bad! I don't know why I watched it again. The movie is a real nightmare, but I think not in the way it should be. Avoid.
Gulczas, a jak myslisz... (2001)
Is it the worst movie I've ever seen? YES!!!!! It's worse than such films as Surf Nazis Must Die and Plan 9 From Outer Space. Everyone outside Poland be glad, because you probably will have no chance to see this disgusting puke, starring the contestants of the Polish edition of Big Brother reality show.
By the way: beware of the sequel ("Yrrek! Kosmiczna nominacja") it's even worse!
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Well, this for sure was one of the most overrated movies of the year, with all those Academy Awards. Don't get me wrong, it's a quite good flick, but there was so much ado about it... Crowe is certainly one of the best world's actors and Harris also gives a wonderful performance, but the script is weak and some scenes are full of pathos. And maybe I don't like this movie, 'cause I was never good at mathematics?
Great book, bad film
Pawel Huelle's book "Weiser Dawidek" is one of the most wonderful novels of Polish modern literature, but it's film adaptation is not worth your time. The movie is boring, miscasted and has no magic in it. Better read than watch if you can.
The Biggest Disappointment of the Year!!!
Long before the opening of Episode 2 I've heard promising commentaries, great reviews and so on... I love the original SW trilogy but even The Phantom Menace was better than the Clones! Of course: we have great, really wonderful special effects in here, but that's all. The most irritating part was the Anakin/Amidala affair, the history of Boba Fett was disgusting, there was also too much Gladiator & Blade Runner in this episode. I hope the third one will be better, because despite all this crap I'm still a SW fan and I wait impatiently.
OK: except FX there were two things worth a look: Christopher Lee and the beginning of the war of the clones.
size doesn't matter
Japanese Godzilla movies from the 50's are still enjoyable and fun. The american remake isn't worth a look. Even FX aren't as good as they should be. Acting could be better also (Broderick is terrible). Avoid this one, rent original.
Love God (1997)
What was that? (spoilers)
I DO love cinema and almost all genres of movies. I also like independent films, but I just couldn't stand Love God. I've seen it a few years ago during the Warsaw Film Festival, so I expected something interesting (or at least something intelligent). And what did I get? A story of a freak, creating a monster of a chewing gum. Well... One out of ten (and that's only because there is no 0 in the ratings).
To watch or not to watch
Watch, of course! I always admired Branagh's films but this one is the greatest. We all know the story, we remember the dialogues and we've seen wonderful Laurence Olivier playing Hamlet. But Kenneth's work is brilliant. Now I would like to see his vision of Macbeth. It could be even better than Polanski' Tragedy of Macbeth.
This is what I call disappointment. I've seen 'Waterworld' a few years ago and I still believe that this is one of the worst high budget movies ever made. It's not entertaining, there is no suspense or action, there is nothing interesting in it. And Costner... I never liked him (although I appreciate his parts in 'Dances with Wolves' and "The Untouchables') but this is probably his worst act ever. You shouldn't watch this film, even if you have nothing else to do.
The Pianist (2002)
One of the greatest
I admire Polanski for almost all of his movies, but this one is really, really great, one of the best films about the Warsaw Ghetto and the fate of Polish Jews. Adrien Brody is fantastic as Wladyslaw Szpilman. I don't know if this film will gain some Academy Awards (Polanski is still not allowed to go to the US), but I hope it will be awarded somehow...
