Great year for films about the 60's, 70's and 80's
20 up-and-coming, criminally underrated, or newly arrived filmmakers. I wish the list did have more of an international flavor, but I've been lazy with my cinema-going as of late.
Not too many really great movies this year (especially from the Hollywood studio system). In this country, it seems like the difference between a great film and a forgettable, marginal film, is a difference that's quickly widening (let's call it America's cultural ADD). But alas, we already have hope for 2014 ("Noah", "Inherent Vice")
The directors on this list are either talentless, or have badly and blatantly betrayed the talent that they once seemed to possess. Or, as in certain cases (i.e. Uwe Boll) they just don't deserve to exist in general.
It may alternate but others who almost made the cut include Phillipe Garrel, Ingmar Bergman, Francis Ford Coppola, David Cronenberg, Lynne Ramsay, Jonathan Demme and Bernardo Bertolucci.
