Red Tails (2012)
If i would've fought in WWII, i would've been very offended.
I never really write reviews to films unless i really dislike them. I really dislike this movie. It's terrible and i will give you the reasons why. I went into this movie with a friend, i wasn't expecting much bc i didn't know much of it except that big film companies were unwilling to fund it and many were saying this was due to an all-African American cast. I do not know how true this statement was, but i do know that coming from a totally neutral perspective to watch this film, i can give you guys an unbiased review. I want to warn you all bc i spent 7$ on the ticket (it's half off on tuesday) and i wanted my refund.
First thing wrong with the movie was the cinematography itself. The scenes were cut in the most random places, you see things blowing up but see no ammunition (from the planes) meeting its target. Its strange. Okay so i let that pass, though. No biggie. If it features good writing and acting, why not give it a shot?
I'm a theatre major, and as so im automatically trained to analyze the acting and writing. If the film makes me forget to analyze it, then its most def a good film. The acting is bad, all right. There are only a few redeemable actors in the film, most of the main "fly boys" were really bad. Their delivery of the dialogue sounded contrived, emotionless, flat, and shallow. There were no reasons, to objectives, goals. As actors we are taught to really do things, really go the distance, many times the actor in this pretended to do things. It was obvious, gestures seemed unnatural.
Lastly, the acting can only be as bad as the writing and the writing is very bad. The dialogue sounded strange, the words were unnatural, giving the actor strange diction. These words don't sound like they derived from real people, they don't sound good at all. Cheesy and flat is more like it. Which only made the characters really one dimensional. The story itself seems rather in the air, for a lack of better term. There's nothing to hang on to.
I've never walked out of a film in my life, but my friend and i looked at one another halfway through and simultaneously rose. We couldn't believe how terrible this film was. I was offended.
That is an hour i will never get back, and $7 i could've taken a shot of jack daniels with. Guys, if you want to watch this movie, make sure you don't pay full price, or you'll just wait for it on cable. It's that bad.
I absolutely love this movie. I haven't read the book, but the movie was great, fast pace and easy to follow along. Some people despise it, but the thing about Hollywood is that they change books a lot to create a more enjoyable adaptation. People just have to learn to look at books and movie that are based on them as different stories, If you just sulk and pout during the movie because they change parts, your not going to enjoy anything. I think people should give this movie a chance, without referring to the book, thats just going to ruin the experience. Anyways this movie was awesome and i'll watch it again and again, i hope there's a sequel.
