Chicago P.D.: End of Watch (2021)
When you forget to put baking soda in your bread recipe
This episode makes the previous one look like The Godfather with how bland it was to watch. It felt like trying to force yourself to like your annoying co-worker because he brings donuts to the office everyday. And overall, the donuts are great, some are perfect, some less, and then there's that one soggy oily donut at the bottom of the box that you have to eat so you can finish the whole box. That donut is this episode.
In this episode we can experience the joys of having absolutely no emotional connection to the antagonist. Yes, we know we're supposed to feel bad for them. Did we actually feel bad for them? We did not. It's like the writers specifically wrote the character to suffer the most misfortune possible but then forgot to make us care. Like watching a comedy skit where someone makes a terrible joke so everyone is left awkwardly waiting for something funny to happen, except it never happens and it just keeps being awful until it's finally over and you can go on IMDB to complain about it.
On the brighter side: Brilliant performance from Patrick Flueger as always. He's the only reason I didn't turn this off mid-way. I also kinda liked the first chase scene, it felt more dynamic than usual but I wish they'd done a bit more with it to make it really great.
I feel like a criminal for rating a Chicago P. D. episode anything below 7/10, but that rating slowly lowered as I realized how much of a waste of time this episode was. This was about as interesting as watching a real-time bird-feeding livestream, and you only keep watching because there's a really cool bird called Patrick Flueger on the screen.
Chicago P.D.: Impossible Dream (2021)
Such a good episode
I enjoyed this episode from start to finish. The conflict was written well, you feel sympathy for the characters and it wasn't forgettable. Cooper is a great character and his perspective on the whole situation and empathy made him very likeable from the get-go. Unlike some other reviews are oddly mentioning, this episode doesn't actually have a lot of BLM themes, just enough for it to not be the focus of the episode at all but also enough for it to not be forgotten. Hope I see more of Cooper in the next episodes to come!
Chicago P.D.: White Knuckle (2020)
Way better than ep. 1
This episode was much better at handling the conflict between Atwater and the other cops than the first one. It didn't feel as overwhelming and, to be honest, forced. I also really enjoyed the scene at the ending!
However, the crime storyline on this episode had the same problem of being kinda boring at parts (not as much as the other episode's one, but at the end I kinda forgot what was happening). It felt like wasted potential considering the set-up is actually kinda interesting. It was missing that 'something' that keeps you hooked up to the story and waiting to find out what happens next.
Chicago P.D.: Fighting Ghosts (2020)
Boring, but less because of its "wokeness" and more because of its writing
To be honest, I didn't expect much from this episode after I read its reviews. However, I find that they focus their criticism on the wrong area. The episode wasn't bad because of its "political correctness", because it did address real issues and problems that the CPD has both in the show and in real life. It was bad because the way that these themes were approached were kinda boring.
There was no tension and barely any focus on the usual criminal storyline, to the point where I watched the episode 1 hour ago and I already forgot most of what even happened. Although I found Kevin's storyline much better, it also felt quite exhausting to watch (which is a shame, since he's my favorite member). I ended up scrolling on my phone at the end of the episode because it just wasn't that engaging.
I find conflict fun to watch in shows, and its why I love Chicago PD so much; the writers are very good at balancing the storyline and the tension and conflict together. But this episode felt like they tried to punch way too much into one episode instead of spreading it throughout a couple of them in order to not overwhelm the criminal storyline.
