This is a list of my favorite Japanese films of all time. I will admit to not seeing many modern Japanese films outside of the popular Miyazaki films. I will also admit (though it is obvious from the list below) that I am a big Kurosawa fan. You will also note that I haven't fallen in love with many Ozu films (which may be considered blasphemy if I want to say I'm a Japanese film fan) but I do tend to like almost all of his films. I am very open to suggestions of others to watch. All films included are 7/10 or higher.

a list of 50 people
In order to create a list of my all-time favorite directors, I created a formula that takes into account the mean and median value for each director (slightly favoring mean over median). It is also to the directors benefit if I have seen more of their movies. I must have seen at least 3 movies by the director for them to be ranked.

I feel this is a pretty accurate list. If I've seen more movies of a director it tends to mean that I have enjoyed their films enough to seek out others or that they have at least been recognized as having more good films. I also didn't want to penalize directors for me seeking out some of their lesser known (and in most cases worse) work because I liked many of their other works when the same wouldn't be done for other directors (prime example: Sergio Leone's 'The Colossus of Rhodes'). I also feel a 3 movie minimum keeps people from simply having 1 great film being considered. It also for the most part takes away people who have only done one great series (though this maybe isn't taken into account as much as it should be).

The director must also have at least a single ranking of 9 or higher to be considered. You can be good with less, but to be an all time great you need to have great.

Also, the weights may need to be tweaked, especially when you get closer to the end. I was surprised a few names didn't make it (Spike Lee the biggest, though his films have been everywhere from bad, good, to great, so take that for what it's worth). I know there a several directors that I simply need to see more movies of so that their weighted score increases as well. There are several just outside of the top 50 that I think could easily make this list as soon as I see more of their films.
