Sorkin does it again!
Living in the UK, none of the networks, not even the cable ones, seem to have picked this show up. I've just sat and watched the whole 11 episodes so far on streaming video on the internet in a single weekend, and now I'm wondering what the hell UK TV execs are on.
This was always going to be a hard sell. The fact that it's Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme means it was bound to be compared to the West Wing, and that's unfair on any show. WW was a superb piece of television right from the first episode. Not many shows can do that. This one started well with the fantastic Judd Hirsch speech, but apart from that the premiere was quite patchy. It takes about five episodes or so to really get going, but once it gets there it gets there.
This is television writing of the highest calibre. The characters and story lines are developing nicely, and the cast is settling down into their roles, the relationships are coming together well, I'm starting to actually care about these people and that's what a good show should do.
As a Brit, nice to see that the wonderfully talented Lucy Davis is getting a lot more to do in recent episodes as well, rather than just being someone in the background as she was to begin with. Good that NBC have picked up the option on the rest of the series, I can't wait to see what they have in store for us in the remaining 11 episodes.
