The Age of Adaline (2015)
Could have been really good
I'm writing a review thrice a decade, but this movie annoyed me so much. I liked the premise, I liked the acting of Huisman and Lively and the execution was for the most part surprisingly good.
What I didn't like was for one the stupid narrator. You don't need a narrator for this little substance, all it did was point our nose at the obvious like we were children who had to be explicitly told what's happening along with some stupid technobabble nobody cares for. For another thing the reveal didn't work and it was too predictable.
This movie could easily have been saved by another day of shooting and some editing. Sad story really.
needs more CGI !!!
Seriously though, Blizzard is famed for it's cutscenes. This movie clearly should have been animated and made by Blizzard themselves.
The acting was atrocious, the sets were terrible and the story barely coherent for someone who doesn't know the Warcraft lore.
I just don't get it. Also I really don't get whom it was target to. For people who know the lore there were just so many stupid things and for people who didn't there were too many pointless things. I don't get it.
That being said, for a video game movie it was sort of watchable. Watch it, if you feel nostalgic about Warcraft and have a couple of hours to kill (or if you are really desperate for a fantasy movie).
Style over substance, without style
I saw no production value in it at all. Camera was awful and trying too much to be creative with shots and rather distracting than helping. Also I felt they were additionally always trying to shoot scenes the easiest way possible. The CGI of the City reminded me of Babylon5 which aired fifteen years ago and had no budget at all. The action was also really awful, apart from some over-stylized parts here and there (which was instantly destroyed by the utter bullshit concept of the gun-fighting-thing-whatever). On the one side exploding casks everywhere like it was an 80s action movie and on the other the recent trend to take the cheap way out of focusing the camera always only on small parts of a scenes to make things easier (I guess? Or because of Greenscreen?). Well the acting was at least fair and I say that under the assumption that the screenplay was just garbage.
****SPOILER***** The logic is another thing in this movie that never actually let me feel anything for it. Does not taking your drugs make you an utter fool? The only reason Preston needed to express every little emotion lengthy in PLAIN SIGHT I can think of is that the audience is taken for just the same kind of fool. Small signs of his newfound emotions would have been much more fitting and less distracting than this mummers farce. Also, I like fantasy and sci-fi, but the already mentioned concept of that gun-fighting-thing-whatever took my suspension of disbelief by brute force. I could have lived with that in another movie, but with all these other flaws I really couldn't find anything positive in that. /****SPOILER*****
While I initially thought I would like the movie because of the story no matter how it's done. It did it's best to hide the story behind all that stuff I already mentioned and hated it. So much could have been done with concept and the story delivers so little, because it needs to show STUFF and overacted emotions.
I really can't see in what universe this movie constitutes as decent, let alone good movie. A 7.6, seriously?
It could have been Matrix or Blade Runner, hell I would have been satisfied if it would have been all cheesy not taking itself seriously like Judge Dredd. But this? I really can't see any redeeming qualities to this movies.
As it is, it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. 3/10. I didn't rate it any lower, because it still looked decent in places and the acting as already mentioned wasn't completely horrible.
