Sex Tape (2014)
Looking at the title and the trailer you can think that is another mediocre movie and relies on sex to sell. But in my opinion this film doesn't fall in this category.
Yes, it has some cliché but overall is pretty original. It's doesn't rely to much on sex scenes, although too much non-sexual nudity, and it has some comedy scenes that you don't see in any movie. Like louring an attack dog on a running belt. No, is not about animal cruelty is about what a men can conceive in an attempt to save his life. Also it relies on some contrasts. In a portion of the movie you have two chaotic characters (main protagonists) at a cool and calm bosses (actually she works as independent but you count him as her boss) home. It's hard not to laugh.
Sure, after watching it I felt that something was missing. Some aspects appear a little forced, some humor you don't find it all that funny but I don't think this is a 5 (rating) more a 7 or even a 8 since there are some things you don't see in any movie and you might remember it for a while.
The Host (2013)
Synopsis, a little different from the one in movie description: This movie is a about an alien race or races (sometimes is implied) that take over the Earth and treat humans body as hosts. The story is presented through a person - 2 characters: Melanie the human and Wanda/Wanderer the alien residing in her body. It's a struggle between human-host and at the same time a struggle for Wanda to be accepted among the human resistance; and of-course some romance involved. I presented this synopsis because sometimes the trailers include too much info and sometimes to little. This being the latter.
References: This is viewed as an original work, an adaptation after a book. I never read the book but the movie like many other Hollywood ones seems to respect the Platon's "law": All that is said have been said before. The Twilight saga, Stargate.
Now the review: how I said in the title I found it lengthly in the sense that is doll overall. This makes me feel to try to make my own editing on this movie, but this copyright... Is not that interesting to be presented in over 2 hours. I think that more than 40 minutes can be cut out and make it more appealing. Sadly, overall this movie is about nothing. You watch it for 2 hours and at the end you ask your self what you saw, what was about and what you have learned. Not much or maybe nothing. I like it and rated him 5 instead of 4 because it presents a better world on Earth, sadly only after the aliens takes over, like presented in the trailer. If some of you expect some action scenes don't expect too much: only 2-3 action scenes that involves some sort of short duration chases. Nothing more.
Discrepancies: I was intrigued a little on how they try to describe a host-entity relationship. We get to know them both Melanie and Wanda. Something similar is in Stargate SG1 with the Gould and Tokra. But when Wanda gets to the human resistance they are ignorant about the fact that the host personally might be "alive" inside and that if you kill or hurt the alien you do the same for the host. Really they haven't seen Stargate or similar work? Or at least the concept of devil possession in fiction work or religion? What kind of humans do we have in this movie? Also Wanda tells us later that only some human personalities resist inside while the others fade away or die. Why this approach I don't know. They wanted to be more original then Stargate? Anyway the big problem here is that this aliens, how they are presented to us are really benevolent. I mean they are not destructive in their behavior and they have a nice society. How come this benevolent "creatures" come to Earth and assimilate 7 billions people, not caring about their will and also killing many of them (personalities) in the process? One explanation given is for them to stay alive but is not enough because they don't seem to have remorse about it. I know it's a movie and in many cases I can move on on this things but some of them are in your face and you have to perform a little lobotomy on yourself to be able to watch further.
How, I said, I like better worlds scenarios but the alien society is presented far less then I expected and the story is more spoken (presented in words) than presented through action, plot etc. They turned a good premise in something similar to Twilight, which I don't liked too much. I have noticed that different movie titles get distinctive reviews from users, one saying that is good another saying that is bad... The reason for this I believe it to reside in the "number" of previous movies one had seen. Personally I saw more than I can count and having so much references it obviously that this title doesn't impress me much. If you will see it, I think you can agree with me. I stated this to give you a reference about the review.
