East of Eden (1955)
One of the most moving films ever made.
East of Eden is most definitely one of the most moving films I've ever seen. I am a huge admirer of James Dean, and I think that this, his first movie, was also his best. James perfectly acted the part of the unloved son, probably because of his own life experiences, but he nonetheless did an amazing job. The story itself is powerful as well. I'm not a big fan of Steinbeck, but I have to say that I love this modern Cain and Able story. This movie was made for James Dean, and the cast that supported him was also flawless. I could not, in my wildest dreams, ever create a cast and script more perfect for each other.
Alias (2001)
The best new show this season
This season has brought a lot of useless stupid shows into our television sets (Wolf Lake, anyone??), but I'm glad to see one show that deserves to go the distance...Alias. Again, J.J. Abrams (Felicity) has created a winner. Alias combines top-notch acting with some of the best writing I've ever seen. The plotline is original, which is a refreshing difference from the hundreds of similar sitcom pilots we see every year. As I'm sure you know, there is a big difference from "my new favorite show" and "my favorite new show", however, Alias gets my vote for both titles. I give it a ten.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
josh and ben alone are a good reason to see this movie
alright, i'm not going to lie and say that pearl harbor was the saving private ryan of 2001, but i will say that it was the best movie i've seen all summer. granted, we already knew what was going to happen, but the movie itself was enjoyable (yes, all 3 hours of it). i really thought that ben affleck and josh hartnett worked well together, and kate beckinsale's career seems to be taking off after her part in this film. in addition to the great cast, pearl harbor had special effects like no other film has ever had. for this reason alone, i think that pearl harbor can be considered great.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
One of the best movies of the twentieth century.
Without a doubt, Good Will Hunting can be considered one of the greatest films of the twentieth century. The writing was superb, the acting first rate, and the camera work brilliant. I consider myself to be a good judge of movies, and I've seen many classic films, and many really crappy ones. Good Will Hunting is definitely in my top five list (with a bullet!). It has everything that a moviegoer could want in a film, and just think, without this film, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck might never have become truly famous. Now that would have been a terrible crime! The two of them (in their finest performances to date)were so phenomenal along with the Oscar-winning performance of Robin Williams. After watching this film, I cried for hours. This film has the ability to touch people in a way that no other has been able to.
Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
The first real teen angst film.
There are not many movies that can touch someone the way that Rebel without a Cause has touched me. The character Jim Stark (played perfectly by the incomparable James Dean) is a perfect model of youth, and his troubles and emotions are the exact same ones that teenagers of any era experience. Nicholas Ray took movies in a new direction with this film, creating the first visionary movie about teenagers and their problems. Not only does "Rebel" have a terrific script and plot, but the acting is first rate as well. James Dean is (in my opinion)the most amazing actor to have ever lived. I can think of very few actors that can even come close to his talent. Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo are also fantastic, they are an amazing complement to James Dean and his character Jim. The story itself, which revolves around the effect that parents have on their children, is amazing. It is truly the fisrt movie to depict the troubles that teenagers face every day, and it has the ability to relate to teenagers and their parents at the same time. Nicholas Ray is to be commended for his brillant work on this film.
The Princess Diaries (2001)
There should be more movies like this.
i went to see this film on a rainy day with three little boys (8, 10 and 12), three little girls (7, 9, and 12), my mother, father, and aunt. every single person left the theatre laughing and talking about it the whole way home. needless to say it's not often that a movie entertains so many different age groups equally. my mother, of course enjoyed julie andrews. the girls loved erik von detten and mandy moore. i loved the storyline and the adorable newcomer robert schwartzman. in an age of big budget blockbusters and sappy overly dramatic love stories, it is so refreshing to see a movie that satisfies the entire family, while still managing a g-rating, so that the entire family can enjoy it together.
