The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Shawshank Redemption ! probably the most watched, the most liked movie of its time and rightly so. The plot flows like a poetry, making the experience of watching surreal.
A young banker(Tim Robbins)is being framed for the alleged murder for his wife. The man pleads innocent but the court thinks otherwise and is given a long sentence in the jail and the name of the jail is Shawshank. The man is completely unassuming and brilliant. Taking sometime to get adjusted to the jail environment, he befriends many in the jail. The main one is Reed (Morgan Freeman)who smuggles cigars and other necessary things to the jail inmates.
The jail warden is Norton (Bob Gunton) who is a bible loving, strict person who hoards and involved in money laundering. Noticing the talent of the banker, he uses the banker's knowledge to launder the money. Meanwhile,a young guy is jailed for a petty crime and he confides to Tim Robbins something that could help him to prove his innocence. But the warden doesn't approve of it and he gets the young man killed.
On one fine day, Tim Robbins suddenly escapes from the citadel of Shawshank. How he planned it and the execution of it forms the next part of the movie.
The movie is perhaps the best prison break movie ever done. Stephen King deserves credit for this wonderful, intelligent story and equally wonderful characterization, the director of the movie for his surreal creation of the jail environment and actors for their brilliant performances. The movie could have been edited by a few minutes and could have been made well within 2 hours. That fact could be overlooked given the thrill, entertainment the movie provides.
A nonsensical trip of two hours
Truly! I expected the movie to be great given the number of awards it had bagged (one of a very few films to be nominated for all the categories in the academy awards). But it turned out to be a movie of a bad taste. May be it was a rebellious movie of its day where Hollywood was conservative about the use of language in the movies. But that alone can't be a qualification for the movie.
A professor of history(Burton) and his wife(Taylor)invite young couple to their home. When the young couple come, they start venting their anger on each other and on the couples as well. They decide to torment the couple's mind. The real person who's tormented is the viewer for his decision to watch the movie. Elizabeth Taylor acts well as a chronic alcoholic. There ends the positives of the movie.
If someone asks me who's afraid of Virginia woolf, i would definitely say "I am" !!
The Shining (1980)
Shining shines in many ways
The Shining involves two big names : one author, Stephen King, the other: Director Stanley Kubrick. Stephen King, the master of horror genre and Kubrick, a crafty director have created this horror The Shining.
An aspiring writer, Jack Torrance (played by Nicholson) signs a contract to supervise a hotel in the winter. He wanted solitude for a few months to complete a novel and some income as well. He comes with the family (Wife and son). The son, possesses psychic abilities to see the past as well as the future. The hotel acts as a person who is possessed and after just over a month Jack loses his mind and decides to kill his family. What happens after that forms the climax of the movie.
There are many things to look out for in the movie. Kubrick films are known for their technical brilliance. This movie is no different. Camera angles to sound recording, everything is rich. And a brilliant performance by Jack Nicholson. For any movie in the horror genre, music plays a very important role. The music director scores a perfect 10 in his scores !
Should be in your must-watch list if you are a horror genre fan.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
A first few minutes of raw violence
Well, in most of the reviews written about this movie, you can find one thing in common i.e the first 30 minutes of war scene depiction. No doubt that is one of the best ever war depictions ever made. We've never been to any war to vouch for something as real. But the first few minutes of the movie looks like straight from the battleground. A sheer raw terror is unleashed.
The story is all about saving one person whose all three brothers are dead. According to a policy of the US government, the lone survivor of the family should be saved. The whole movie shows the efforts of the U.S troops to find out the person.
There is some amount of banality in the movie. But overall the movie is a good one and considered one of the best war movies ever made.
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Sir yes sir !!
This is a masterpiece of Stanley Kubrick. The way in which the movie progresses from humorous tone to a serious one is simply superb.
The storyline is simple. It is based on the Vietnam war. A young group of recruits are brought into the island to be trained. After the training, they are assigned to different tasks in Vietnam. There should be a special mention about the character of drill instructor Hartman played by R. Lee Ermey. The way in which he executes his role with an absolute élan is simply amazing.
The first part of the movie is the training part which actually is the best part of the movie and then the movie turns more serious and enters the war zone of Vietnam. Though the movie tilts towards boredom in the middle, the director manages to bring it back with a great climax.
There have been quite a few movies about Vietnam war. This definitely comes in top 3 among them ! 9 out of 10 for this !!
Minority Report (2002)
Not just another sci-fi movie
This movie can take you to the future i.e. A.D.2054 without any of your efforts. All that you have to do it is to watch it. Before watching, i'd thought it was just another science fiction movie. But, not to expect a mediocre stuff from the great Spielberg who has mastered the craft of film making.
The movie is set in 2054 wherein there is a department of police which recognizes a crime before it is committed. The protagonist, Tom Cruise who is the head of the division is framed for his no mistake. The reason for which he's framed and how he gets out of it forms the substance of the movie.
Spielberg had reportedly met & discussed with many scientists to give a realistic view of the future to the audience. Needless to say, he has achieved it with a perfect ten. Scenes where the spiders search for the accused appears as a possibility in the future.
Movie has the qualities of many genres like sci-fi, thriller, suspense, thematic etc. It is a good watch!!
Schindler's List (1993)
A realistic account on atrocity!
It is said "power corrupts; but absolute power corrupts absolutely". This movie just gives a glimpse of the possible effects if the power is vested with some insane person with a mindless hatred towards a group of people just because of their birth.
I had not judged Hitler to the fullest before seeing this movie even though many were condemning him to be the cruelest dictator the world has ever seen. After seeing it, I am convinced of the fact that he was really so. The fact that 6 million Jews were massacred during the world war-2 just because they were Jews is a shame on the entire humanity.
The movie gives an account of the polish Jews during the Second World War and how the protagonist, Oscar Schindler saves 1200 Jews from being gassed. The cinematography is simply brilliant. It gives a sense of timelessness to the movie. Also, not to forget some wonderful performances. All factors make the movie very realistic. No wonder it is one of the best movies in many lists and deservedly won the academy award for the year 1993. Steven Spielberg will be remembered as an iconic director even if all of his other movies are discounted.
In the days where negationism of the Nazis' atrocities is getting stronger and the killings are being justified, this movie is a harsh reminiscence of the black era of Europe.
La battaglia di Algeri (1966)
I'd imagined the movie to be just another war movie, but it was not so. It had a great stuff in it and it is perhaps one of the best war movies ever made and needless to say it is not a fictitious story but a true story from the pages of history.
The stages of revolution that is portrayed, the forming of the organization, the plotting of attacks, actual operation of attacks, some of them which are carried by women and children is so realistically shown in this movie. Even to this day, these happen in many parts of the world. The makers of the movie have struck a perfect balance between the features of a documentary and a feature film. Kudos for them for that.
One more important thing to be noted is that the makers have not taken any sides, be it Algerian or the French while narrating, but the story is told form a neutral point and is one more point which adds beauty to the movie.
If you are a fan of war movies, or a student of history then this movie must be in your watch-list!!
Disgusting is the word!
If you ask me one word to describe this movie, i would say disgusting. There is nothing much the movie has to offer. A one line story is stretched for 90 odd minutes. I have no clue why i ended up seeing this crap.
A psycho doctor has the idea of making a human centipede by joining one person's mouth to the other's rectum and he goes to do it. This is all the story is. We don't know how true the idea is but the makers claim the idea to be true. But who cares, the movie doesn't entertain for sure. Forget entertainment for a moment, at least it should be disturbing like SAW, HOSTEL or WRONG TURN. It is not even that.
There is no reason to watch it even if you have too much time at your disposal.
American Beauty (1999)
To hell with the academy awards!
I don't understand on what basis academy awards are chosen! i began wondering after seeing this flick. I kinda felt it is a no-brainer, or perhaps heavy brainer so that ordinary mortals like us can't comprehend.
A man who is frustrated with his life and family members is infatuated with his daughter's friend. In pursuit of boning her, the person tries heavily and begins to change his life and his attitude from being bovine to being able to voice out his interests and opinions. The wife is a real bitch who cares only about her career and doesn't give a hoot to anything else.
All the characters except a few appears to be from mental asylum. Probably they shared the neighborhood with the people who recommended this one to Oscars!!
I give 5 for this , 3 for Mena's face and body, 2 for the rest :-)
