O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
If it weren't for the music, I'd skip it
This slightly amusing tale of 3 escaped convicts is saved by it's music. Yes, there are a few humorous moments that produced a chuckle or two, but I wouldn't sit through it again, unless it was to hear the music.
Considering the acting talent in the movie, it's hard to believe it's as forgettable as it is. George Clooney does a very good job of lip synching to Dan Tyminski (Allison Krause & Union Station) although it is uncredited, so those without the thought that George Clooney doesn't sing that well (he might, remember his Aunt Rosemary) may never discover Dan's music for themselves, that would be a sad thing.
The American President (1995)
My faviorite unbelievable love story.
If you are hopelessly romantic, you MUST see this movie. Excellent performances from Michael Douglas, Annette Benning, Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox and many others.
If you were a West Wing fan, you will be amazed how many things were plucked from this movie and dropped into The West Wing.
Pre-maritial sex, occurring after a brief "courtship" make it unfit for viewing by teenagers - unless this is something you approve of as a parent and would like emulated. I was willing to overlook it, because I enjoy the love story so much.
Maybe being widowed at a young age, like the President, makes the movie closer to my heart.
I highly recommend this movie.
Honest view of Appalachia circa early 1900's
This movie accomplishes many things within the premise of "Songcatching". The movie exposes the hardships, ignorances, prejudices, resourcefulness, intelligence, commonsense and heart of the people who remained out of touch with "progress".
The movie has some graphic and controversial scenes; but the majority is appropriate for all ages.
The way the folk music is in-twined in the lives of the local people is magical and authentic. I wish a sound track was available with the full versions of the "collected" songs in the original voices of the actors, in the same simplistic way they were produced for the movie.
This is a movie I have enjoyed on many occasions and look forward to future viewings. I have purchased the DVD.
