Band of Brothers (2001)
Manipulative and Boring!!
How many WWII films will Spielberg make before he's done "teaching" the American public about The Greatest Generation? Nothing in this mini-series sheds a new light on the atrocities of war- as "Band of Brothers" is essentially, a low-rent remake of "Saving Private Ryan". In the past 15 years, we have been inundated with so many war movies, that audiences can practically write the battle and training camp sequences themselves. (Though it doesn't exactly take much work- as the battle scenes are essentially a bunch of pampered actors in fatigues running around screaming loudly at each other while the stedi-cam goes nuts) If you're looking for surprises, you won't find them here. You will, however, find the innocent Midwesterner, the "funny" Italian guy, the Jew who wants people to know he is "just like everybody else", the stoic troop leader, the guy who is a bit unhinged, etc, etc, etc.
"Band" is like every other war movie you've ever seen, except that the characters are so poorly drawn (with the exception of the Easy troop leader, Winters) that they are virtually indiscernible from one another.
The camera-work is nauseating, in the great tradition of "The Blair Witch Project", the acting is blah (with the exception of Damian Lewis as Winters, again) but the worst part about the whole thing is the OVERWHELMING SCORE!! If when you watch films, you're not sure when you're supposed to be happy, scared, sad, etc- then this is the movie for you- because the music is OMNIPRESENT and horrible!! I couldn't even hear the actors sometimes, because it was so loud and distracting. About five minutes into the mini series, I became really irritated by it and started hating the director for trying to manipulate my emotions.
All in all- this isn't the worst movie ever made- but it is pretty mediocre. Totally forgettable, not worth your time. If this is an indication of how bad the rest of the series will be, I will not be tuning into parts 3-10, I'd rather be doing my laundry.
