One of my favorites. Not for everyone. Requires a great deal of patience and paying of attention. It's a lonnnggg, slow, building movie. No car chases, no Bruce Willis leaping off a skyscraper (hey - I enjoy those types of movies too, but if that's all you like, you'll hate this one). I had to keep pausing it and walking away for a few minutes, it was intense. It made me take a few deep breathes, try to process, and proceed. Great cast. I previously hated Tom Cruise in anything I saw him in. As unlikable a character as he plays here, it was the first time I saw him display some real depth with his acting. I actually was impressed with his performance. And great songs - I bought the Aimee Mann soundtrack CD with the lyrics included - it's a killer. Kudos to director Anderson for writing the movie from her songs.
The Final Cut (2004)
far from perfect but raises interesting questions
Yes, it's a "down" movie, it moves slowly, it has more questions than answers, etc., but the obvious big issue is the whole "Big Brother/privacy" debate. Implanting of chips (albeit, not video chips) is already here. Would you, as a parent of an unborn child, want one of these implanted in your son/daughter without his/her consent? Do parents have that right? Would you trust a total stranger to edit your life? Would it come out the way you wanted? Would you care by that point? When you turn 18, would you then be allowed to make the decision to have it removed? How would you know if there was one in your head? Would they keep records of everyone who had one?
