Huesera (2022)
Boring and irritating
Boring and irritating are the words that can resume this movie perfectly.
Maybe my disappointment came from the high expectation I had with this one. Anyway, it is what it is.
All characters are unpleasant, even the children. The pace, the bad choice of giving the viewer information drop to drop just to make the length longer... I barely endured it - I needed to pause three times to check how long left to finish.
The main problem is that the film had big ambitions but failed to achieve them. It focuses a lot on symbolism but, in the end, leaves so many elements loose here and there that the message arrived with noise, interfering with the understanding.
Not to mention the quality of a big part of the production. Frankly, some scenes seem to be picked off some unfunny comic sketch.
Smile (2022)
Common
The main issue with this kind of movie is the need to show something original. The Smile tried. The premise seemed to lead that way. But, then, from the middle, it falls into the common place where almost all other films of the genre do. Due to this, the end was totally predictable and disappointing - to be honest, it would require a really new and unconventional idea to escape this.
Of course, all mentioned above wouldn't make the movie necessarily bad, only forgettable. But it won't happen either. Knowing that it made a huge profit, we will probably see a sequence in the nearby future.
And that is the main objective nowadays: establish a good franchise. Isn't it?
Storm of the Century (1999)
A good one
I saw Stephen King calling this the favourite miniseries of those he had written. So, I decided to take a look.
The history is good and the suspense is well done. I've just watched the last episode and found myself trembling during the climax scene - it's quite desperate.
However, it left a couple of questions unsolved. I also think that it could be shorter: most parts of the second episode were useless and seems to be put there only to adequate the run time of the show.
It's also 90's TV playing with any possible special effects they thought will impress the viewers - it failed at that time and looks corny today.
Anyway, worth a watch.
Malignant (2021)
Over-baked
This movie isn't a total waste of time, but I couldn't enjoy it as I felt uncomfortable with its pace - for a film of almost 2 hours.
And it was ridiculous how they ended It, making the intention for a sequel evident - I mean, it seems the only objective: prepare for a second part.
The White Lotus (2021)
Missed opportunity
The 2 first episodes create so many expectations and I was really wondering what it would be when it reaches the climax.
But there is nothing.
The ending brought me down, totally disappointing!
Asesino del Olvido (2021)
Promising start, disappointing thereafter
The first half of this series is really good. Then, seems that there was so much history to develop and just a bit of time left that it was concluded in any which way, on hurry mode, harming the whole thing.
Damián Alcázar, in anycase, is superb in the role of Pascual León.
The Perfection (2018)
Interesting and bizarre
The plot was doing fine till that shredding final part. It went too far and proceeded to a bizarre ending scene. I am sure they could find better options to conclude this movie without it.
Worth a watch, anyway.
Los ojos de Julia (2010)
A little bit exaggerated
I liked the suspense atmosphere they made here.
Nevertheless, a lot of things doesn't seem to fit: the sister suicide, the husband death, the neighbours and, of course, the shadow assassin.
So, a very irrelevant person who became almost invisible. He goes anywhere, enters any place without been noted and has extraordinary abilities on any kind of device, making him a master saboteur.
Very impressive! Reminds me of Jason and his cousin Michael Myers!
The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
Repeat mode
I wasn't expecting much of it, and that's exactly what I got in the end.
This kind of supernatural movie became so predictable, maybe because they exhausted the formula with all the other ones: The Conjuring, Annabelle, etc. The curse of La Llorona it's actually a recycling of mixed parts of those films plots.
Host (2020)
A real good surprise.
I could feel the tension and fear of the characters. Really well done!
It's not a long movie, so things begin early and escalates quickly.
Of course, you should not expect a masterpiece, but, if your main goal watching horror movies are the scares, you will enjoy.
The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018)
Nothing new.
Well, it's hard to watch a possession movie in which they didn't lost the path and went through common place - the devil, super strong, killing personally everyone on his way. That's what happened here, unfortunately.
Better luck next time!
Before I Wake (2016)
Waste of a promising plot.
Seems that they had spent so much time in the first half of the film that left no space to develop the story to a proper end.
Sad!
The Eye (2008)
Good for a boring saturday night.
Probably because I had none expectation about this movie, it really seems good to me.
I really enjoyed the story, and be pleased for its non abuse of exaggerations and cliches commons on horror movies. They didn't lost the point in the middle of it, trying to add many spectaculars things just to make the film longer.
Nevertheless, the end is so predictable thal almost disappointed me, but not that much. It worth the watch.
Voces (2020)
Don't listen! But they will, right?
Well, we were been warned by a lot of horror movies: never buy an old countryside house, or you'll put yourself, and your beloved ones, in danger.
But still have those who don't listen.
I liked this one. The old reused formula still works, although its ending abuse of the cliche.
But I mainly watch to terror for the scares and we've got some here, so I'm fine!
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Not what I was waiting for
Don't create expectations based on "Hill House". There are much less scares/chills here to face.
Although I consider it really worth to watch, I need to say that sometimes the narrative rhythm go so slowly that prejudice the development of plot and characters, giving me a feeling that something is missed. A problem they didn't had in Hill House.
Flipped (2010)
A surprise
Never had heard about until it randomly shows up on TV today.
It's delightful when everything fits: history, scene, characters. Really enjoyable.
La influencia (2019)
Avoid it.
Another children-been-possessed-by-the-devil story.
Bad development of plot and characters. In the end, make no sense.
Sabrina (2018)
Boring
Once again, a lot pf people being hitted with knives, scissors or whatever sharp weapon. Also bodies flying through windows spreading glass everywhere.
But now, they're facing the devil itself.
Made me feel bored most of the time.
I prefer the others, wich are really more frightening.
The Doll 2 (2017)
Doesn't disappoint
They recycled a lot of things from the first movie, as all sequels do. But the history here is more cohesive, although still there's a lot of scenes just to pad out and make the film longer.
All in all, I found it better than the original and a good option to whom wants some chills and scares.
Stephanie (2017)
Good
The film is really good. Especially in the first half, while the girl faces her loneliness.
However, I found the conclusion is a little bit disappointing. Not because of the answer of whom the monster trully is, but the exaggeration of its force.
Seems like they want to end it with a powerfull scene instead a simple one, wich could have been more effective.
Worth watching nevertheless.
Cucuy: The Boogeyman (2018)
Just a pastime
I really don't know if it was director's intention, but, at the end, is a decent preteen movie. Nothing more than this.
Sometimes made me remember of the "Monster in the Closet" from 86. Of course, this old one is darker and poorer produced.
Maybe that's what that I miss in Cucuy.
The Terrible Two (2018)
Horrendous
I couldn't enjoy a single minute watching this. It's horrible, but not in the right way a terror movie should be.
A completely waste of time! I wish I could get those 90 minutes of my life back.
