These are movies where what is real within the movie is a central issue with which the movie deals. In standard noir, the detective's job is to discover "what really happened," but that is itself depicted in an unambiguous way. Here, we have that noir framework, but we are encouraged to worry about whether some or all of the events depicted "actually happened" at all in the manner shown. Movies of this kind are some of my favorites and all of these are interesting to me for one reason or another. They are mainly listed in order of how successful and central the ambiguities are, and divided into truly great films and entertaining popcorn versions.
