Long Live the Republic
7 May 2001
One of the wonders of the past century in this country has been the adoration of the Kennedys which has been the equivalent of the fuss some nations display over their royals. Personally I do not think most people realize how inept J.F.K. really was. He claimed to have written "Why England Slept" which was actually written by old Joe's friend at the New York Times, Arthur Krock. He also accepted the Pulitzer for "Profiles in Courage" which was written for him by his "good soldier", Ted Sorensen. Khruschev has so little respect for him that he took a chance and placed nukes in Cuba. J.F.K. finally got them removed but the public did not know we had to take our nukes out of Turkey to complete this deal. This movie does show some part of the alleged "Camelot" and the lives of the Kennedy women. Jackie is shown with her love of money and Ehtel is portrayed as being a bit more stern than most of us had always believed. The real victim in this is Joan who comes out as being overwhelmed by the entire scene in Washington and Cape Cod. There have finally been some great books printed on this era and maybe we are blessed as a nation to have survived the Kennedys.

When Trumpets Fade (1998 TV Movie)
A good title when flags stop waving too
4 May 2001
This is the most stressful war movie I have seen since first seeing "All Quiet On the Western Front" which was made in 1930. It is sad to realize that wars can still be supported by sane people. Hitler realized how dangerous the 1930 movie was to his agenda and the Nazis harassed movie goers and put stink bombs in the theaters to deter viewers. I don't think those in the U.S. who never seem to see a war they do not wish to get into would want anyone to see this one. Therefore I heartily recommend it to all. I would have liked to know the fate of the lieutenant at the end though.

Talman apparently impressed at least one viewer.
4 April 2001
William Talman once mentioned this film in a personal interview. He was driving in Los Angeles in an open convertible and stopped at a stop light. A fellow in another convertible looked over at him and asked, "You're the hitch hiker, aren't you?" Talman shook his head indicating that he was. The other driver then left his car and went over and slapped Talman in the face. Talman, when relating this story, said, "You know, I never won an academy award but I guess that was about as close as I ever will come to one."
