Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
One Of The Greatest Films I've Ever Seen
As everyone knows, its really hard for a decent film to be made these days, but, lately, 2009 has given us a load of excellent films. To name a few: District 9 and Star Trek. This film is up with those as the best of 2009, and possibly one of the bests altogether.
The film is basically seen from the point of view of a child, through the camera movements, actions, so forth. It really reminds us what it was like to be an eight year old child growing up. Do you remember how you thought of the world when you were a child? There were no morals. No code. You just lived. The film really captures the true nature of childhood. And the casting of Max Records as Max was a wise move, and Records really has a good career ahead of him in the future.
Now, the monsters. The monsters were spectacular and are each a different characteristic of Max. They are lonely, sad, etc, and they elect Max as their king in an effort to get rid of their pain. Now, the monsters are amazing, through a blend of costumes, puppetry and digital effects, and they can sometimes be incredibly frightening, especially when one goes on a rampage.
Is this movie for kids? No. At least not for kids under seven, at least. Some sequences are very brutal and intense, and the presence of the monsters might scare a few. This is an grown up movie with grown up situations. If films like this are made more often in the future, then we're in for a wonderful future.
