Texas Rangers (2001)
Close, but no Cigar
Well, they managed to construct a pretty good cast [Dawson (surprisingly good), Bobby Donnell, Kelso] but they gave them a choppy script and an underdeveloped story line. Fights to hold your attention, usually loses. COULD have been an excellent movie, but fell much too short.
Follows the idea that too many stars spoil the movie.
Gave it a 5 because of VanDerBeeck, Kutcher, & Usher, who stole his scenes and is a highly talented individual.
Scary Movie 2 (2001)
BIG let down from the first one ...
Basically the same concept as the first one, only this one runs REALLY FLAT at times. Using a movie as lame as The Haunting as the basis of this parody is difficult to start with because almost nobody saw that awful movie (or cares to remember it) - plus the last one had many more horror parodies than this one. Too many scenes fall short of the necessary comedic power the first one had. The whole thing with Chris Elliot and the wheelchair guy was lame, and the dinner scene was a complete flop (and pretty stomach churning too). Nice to see Night Court's Bull Shannon back at work, though. RECOMMENDATION: If you can sneak into the theater for the first 10 minutes of the movie (the Exorcist scene w/ James Woods, Andy Richter, Natasha Lyonne & others) do that (you'll nearly wet yourself), then run away as quickly as possible from the rest of the movie. Too obviously a rush job after the success of last summer's Scary Movie.
