American Reunion (2012)
Legacy of our generation.
First of this is not exactly a review on the movie but rather an emotional statement of mine. After seeing this movie,I was overwhelmed by the nostalgia for the 90s which used to be our school days.Although I am from a different regional and cultural background, these characters represent our generation. That is why even now, when our classmates from school or batch-mates from the university meet up together, some funny scenes in American Pie are reminded with a laugh every now and then. That large, white desktop monitor with a web-cam on top of it in Jim's old room was enough to evoke a lot of memories of the decade. It is quite moving to see that Jim and his friends have become mature and more responsible and established in their careers and gotten kids in the same way the life has changed over the last 13 years for me and my friends. Along with "Good old fashioned orgy" and "Young adult" this was the 3rd movie I saw over past few months that were made about our generation with nostalgic elements of 90s high school life. I really miss those times.
Project X (2012)
It's all about experiencing the atmosphere.
Despite the negative reviews by the critics, I thought of seeing this movie mainly because of curiosity I had after seeing the large discrepancy between Rotten tomato's critics' rating (26%) and the audience's (67%). Anyway I never had to regret. Though it true that there are no meaningful life lessons in this movie, seeing this was a unique experience. It was non-stop fun with music, dancing and crazy stuff plus some romance as well.
May be due to use of POV presentation, the party was felt very much live and real. We have seen enough movies which used the technique of home video footage before. But they mostly belonged to either horror or supernatural genres. My guess is that this is the movie which used this format to the maximum effect. They have used multiple footage claiming to be from mobile phones of party attendees which enabled us to see a particular incident in different angles. To me it was a quite reasonable excuse during this era. Just go and see this not as if you are going to see a movie but as if you are going to a party.
Treasure Island (2012)
This is a down-to-earth pirate movie unlike Pirates of Caribbean.
Well,I only have a vague memory of the novel which I read when I was around 14-15. Therefore, while watching this I really couldn't compare the story and the characters with the original, which I guess was a blessing. I enjoyed this a lot because of several reasons. Firstly,it was quite realistic (esp.without supernatural elements as in POC.)Characters were depicted nicely and felt quite real and believable.Action scenes were decent without unnecessary flamboyance. Locations were wonderful and well matched with the images I had in my mind about the Treasure island since my childhood. If you liked "Master and commander", this is definitely for you. If you are still a fan of POC franchise, you may not like this.
Should be in the list of Movies that are so bad that makes you laugh.
Though I had decided not to write reviews on IMDb anymore, this movie was so bad that I had to write this for the sake of poor fans who love action thrillers. I am not a person who decides to see a movie randomly. I consider several factors before seeing a one. Here the reasons I chose to see this movie were mainly,1.the interesting plot summary(Bourne-like),2.cast filled with several A-list actors,3.IMDB rating of 6.3.(After seeing the movie I found out Rotten Tomato critics' rate was 80%) So everything was set for a thrilling ride. But on the halfway, it was clear that I had been cheated like. This movie was a disaster. It was very slow and for about half of the movie we have to see the main actress walks or runs fanatically here and there being chased by someone, running up and down staircases which was frustratingly long and boring. Every now and then she hits a guy which are shown in a very dull way. There were several pretty stupid incident like the main actress telling her whole somewhat classified story to a total stranger asking him to memorize whole thing which ultimately does not lead to anything. From the beginning, the story is presented in a confusing way leading us to think there is going to be some masterful twist or something in the end. However, at the end it appears that virtually no storyline there. In fact, incredibly stupid story makes it so funny at the end. Please do not waste your valuable time for this crap. P.S. - Rotten tomato viewer's rating was 40% ,something which should be more or less correct compared to critics.
Boring and not funny
I thought of seeing this movie because of the high rating and the very positive reviews on IMDb. In general, I love to see comedies. However, this movie did not make me impressed. In other words, it did not made me laugh which is supposed to be done by a comedy. Movie mostly relies on heavy use of swear words to create jokes but it didn't work for me. Two leading characters looked dumb. 30mins into the movie, I was wondering how on earth this movie got this much of positive reviews. To me this was one of the most boring comedies I have ever seen. This reminded me a similar movie called "Idiocracy". At least it conveyed a good thoughtful message even though it was boring.
Pitch Black (2000)
I watched this movie simply because of nonstop positive reviews in IMDb about this movie. I have seen a pretty good amount of movies (including B grades) with this sort scenario where a group of travelers who get deserted somewhere due to a crash or something. I have enjoyed most of them. But here, since the beginning, it looked quite stupid. Characters does not fit together well. They seemed quite distant. Specially, the Muslim father and his sons who run around every where after the crash as if nothing has ever happened yelling "Allah u Akbar" looked really dumb and an insult to a certain religion. Other characters too (except for Riddik and Carolyn) were very uninteresting. Kid's character is so irritating. In short, most characters failed to get an impression on me. Only positive fact is the last 40mins or so which was somewhat thrilling compared to very dull 1st half. Once in a while, there is a movie which makes you relieved when it finally ends. This is a movie like that.
Killer Elite (2011)
Excellent action thriller..Good Entertainment...
This is probably the best action thriller I've seen since Bourne Trilogy. If you are a Bourne fan you'll definitely like this. This very dynamic, adrenalin pumping and yet action scenes are quite believable and down-to-earth unlike in movies like TRANSPORTER or JAMES BOND movies. There are no clear-cut good guy or bad guys which makes this movie more realistic compared to most movies of this genre. Also this is best performance I've seen from Jason Statham.Though some aspects may be stereotypical of action thrillers, being based on true events makes this movie rather interesting. This is definitely one of the best of its genre.
One of the best in its genre
This movie was relatively unheard of when a friend of mine gave a copy of it. I was skeptical since it was not from Hollywood, no big stars etc. However, it proved I was wrong. This is not a masterpiece indeed; but it was able to get me a thrilling ride from beginning to end. To make it short, I would say this is a combination of "BEHIND ENEMY LINES" scenario at the pace and editing of "BOURNE ULTIMATUM" set at the backdrop of "KING ARTHUR". It's true that script does not focus much on character development but it does not cause any trouble in enjoying this action-adventure. As one reviewer has mentioned, I agree that portrayal of a female warrior by Olga Kurylenko is much more realistic and successful than the similar role played by Keira knightly in "King Arthur". It is really sad that movies like this are not given adequate publicity since this is much better than most big budget Hollywood movies that are being hyped inappropriately.
Ultimate show ever
I've just finished watching LOST.In fact, I didn't have a chance to watch it on TV in a regular manner so I bought DVDs of all six seasons and watched over last 2-3 months. Watching the pilot alone was enough for me to understand that this is not gonna be an ordinary TV show. This fantastic show easily surpasses all the TV shows I have ever seen. There are a few characteristics that make this show so unique.
1.Concept of running two story lines in a single episode; main story and another story on a centric character presenting as a flashback/flash forward. 2.Never a TV show, in my opinion, was able to depict qualities and history of characters so deep that we tend to feel like they were our friends or relatives that we know for a very long period of time.Even though there were shows that ran longer, they were not able to do that this competently. For example, I used to be a die hard fan of "X files" when I was going to college but I never knew Moulder or Sculley as close as I know Sawyer, Kate or Jack in LOST. 3.Outstanding blend of characters originating from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds; from a spinal surgeon to a con man, from Americans to an Iraqi all teaming up against challenges they face in surviving on the island. 4.Never a show was there which combined elements of so many genres with this much success. Can you imagine action,mystery,adventure,sci- fi,romance, thriller all in one episode? 5.Creation of incidental interactions in a very subtle manner among characters which makes us so amazed and even shocked. (eg.Jack's father having a drink with Sawyer, Kate being friend with Sawyer's ex- girlfriend etc.) I always wonder how come writers come up with ideas that are so subtle.
All I have to say now is that I miss Lost. I miss the Island and I miss the characters of Lost. In fact, I felt as if I have lived past 2-3 month in this island with a bunch of friends. Thanks a lot to the creators of the show for giving me this wonderful experience and I'm doubtful whether there would be another show of this caliber in the future. I hope I was wrong.
Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)
I generally love movies made on historical backdrops. But I felt something wrong with "Girl with a pearl earring" from the beginning. Some art loving viewers have mentioned that people who do not have an interest in art may feel this film boring (due to their ignorance?) I do not like to accept that point. If you're a good filmmaker you can't make films targeting a certain category of people. I guess it is a talent of a good filmmaker to make a person interested in a subject that he/she previously unfamiliar with. I would like to take "Perfume; the story of a murderer" as an example. Like this movie,"Perfume" is also based on a book, almost similar backdrop (18th century Europe) and on a subject that we're not much familiar with (making of perfumes) However, "Perfume" manages excellently to keep the audience attracted to the movie from very first scene to the end.(even though it is a rather lengthy movie) I guess the main mistake is poor adaptation of the story from the book to the movie. It is generally accepted that when you're making a movie from a book you have to do some adjustments since they are two different media. For example, see Gye Richie's "Sherlock Holmes". Even though "Sherlock Holmes" novels are legends, if Richie had made a Sherlock Holmes exactly as depicted in the book, it would have never been a successful movie.
