Secondhand Lions (2003)
Great Family Film
Reminiscent of the old Walt Disney shows on Sunday nights when I was a kid, this movie opened up slowly, but gathered meaning and pace steadily. As seen through the young boy's eyes, initially, his uncles were uninteresting, possibly insane old coots. As he realizes his need for a stable homelife, his respect for them grows. Ultimately his respect becomes outright fascination with the rich character of these two men. Ably portrayed by two outstanding actors, Robert Duvall and Michael Caine, fiction mirrors truth as their seemingly effortless, award-winning acting abilities captivate viewers. They set the bar high for young Haley Joel Osmet. The movie's ending is satisfying and memorable.
Dante's Peak (1997)
This movie is suspenseful enough to keep your interest. The characters are good and the acting is good, though predictable. Different kind of disaster movie; refreshing change from airplane crashes, fires, earthquakes. Has a great deal of geological science included in the storyline. Very interesting. Can't help but be drawn to Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton's efforts to make the romantic subplot enjoyable and believable. I think this is a good movie to get lost in for a couple of hours. I enjoyed it.
New Moon (1940)
A Lovely Escape
This movie is lighthearted and a joy to be "lost in" for an evening. The music and singing perfectly complimented an intricate plot. The quality of Nelson Eddy's and Jeanette McDonald's is incredible, and they take you from the depths of sadness and loss to triumph and joyful reunion throughout the show. Nelson Eddy is as dashing and handsome as any leading man in the 21st century, and Jeanette McDonald's beauty is unrivaled. Both have central roles in a plot that twists and turns, and play them well, intelligently, believably. All the supporting cast is enthusiastic and funny, and add to the energy and drive of the story. The story is clean and innocent which was very refreshing. At the same time it is compelling, engaging and will remain in one's mind for days afterward. A wonderful surprise of a movie, one that I will keep in my movie library for years to come.
A Humorous Take on A Real Situation
The narrative was brilliantly written to show how two superpowers stand at arm's length away from each other and try so hard not to provoke a war which would destroy everything. The comic and acting talents of the cast treat the deadly serious issue in a way that causes us to reflect, and also to see the good in all people. Bravo for an artistic masterpiece as this to show the futility of war!
Babettes gæstebud (1987)
An Artistic Achievement
This has been my favorite movie for a long time. The internal conflicts faced by each of the characters are brilliantly portrayed. It has the effect of inviting the viewer to reflect on their own motives and actions. It tells the story in a concise, straightforward manner, and the ending is not easily anticipated. The setting, in Denmark, reminds us that such conflicts face people everywhere, not only in our little corner of the world, and that strength can be manifested in many forms by people of all cultures.
