Comedy,Drama what more do you want?
28 December 2010
If you like Mash you will like this series. Familiar from a cloudy memory of the TV series I knew there had been a film series and a radio series that included the great Barrymore. Drew's genes are so apparent when one views this film. From the great B to even the most limited characters these films are a joy to watch and with the most memorable lines. And yes I found myself caring about the characters. Charming from a bygone era, and yet timeless. Take a break from today's nutty world and get hooked on these series. And you just might see a character actor just getting started in their youth. Barrymore is in fine form and Kildare's Mom can not be missed.

One Bad Trip
10 December 2005
Would I allow my children to see this movie. No. Do I wish I had not wasted the 4 bucks to rent this movie? Yes. Virginia this is not your mother's Wonka movie. Burton must have been severely beaten as child because his view of the world is horror filled. The music is off key and just plain bad. The visuals are mostly CGI and like the latest Star Wars trilogy lacking in human emotion and reality. Johnny D's version of Wonka is Wonka as Howard Hughs. Creepy and perverse. He reminded me of some weird child molester. Don't waste your money or your time with this remake. Instead rent the original and enjoy the wonderment and beauty of true film making. The music is great and every kid that grew up seeing this favorite can hum the tunes to this day. There's a reason it's a considered a classic like the Wizard of Oz. Tim Burton and Johnny D are two very twisted men and this load of garbage is a bad egg. The original did not need to be remade. It was never broken.

Layered movie well worth the time to pick through...
14 April 2003
Contrary to previous comments on this little jewel of an independent film, this film is worth your time. I venture to say most people who are of the nature to only rent hit movies will not get this film. These are the same people who don't seem to read either.

This jewel unfolds the fabric of many lives. A frustrated father who because of a knee injury never fulfilled his dreams and yet still desires to do what is right. A wife who at first look is the object of her husbands misplaced anger and a son who lives in fear and at the same time dreams. A seemingly simple minded neighbor woman who befriends the little boy as his only playmate. The director and writers of this film lead the viewer down a road of stereotypes. We hate the father, sympathize with the mother and son. We write off the neighbor woman as a simple minded. But as the story unravels we learn that all is not as it appears to be. We learn there are two sides to every story and like the characters not everything is just black and white. Villains become heroes and victims become cowards and the simple minded become sages.

Take the time to unravel the layers of this story and you will find the jewel inside.

Notorious (1992 TV Movie)
Different buy Enjoyable
10 February 2001
This is not your mother's Notorious, but unlike another critic I found Jenny Robertson's portrayal touching and tragic. John Shea, more believable as an agent than Grant and yet a likeable leading man with a romantic quality of times past.

Ms. Robertson is a leading lady in the Michele P. level of beauty and her breathless quality of line delivery is very like the endearing flavor of Ms. Bergman. Mr. Shea and Ms. Robertson so capable of being major motion picture leads and yet Hollywood has not discovered these jewels.

The movie takes the luxury of time and contains a very romantic musical montage. The movies sound track is also flavored of films past.

The supporting roles are perfectly cast and very exotic. So much like those from the first movie it is astonishing.

The movie's tension is no where near the original and yet it is enjoyable all the same.

I do hope Hollywood discovers the talents of Ms. Robertson and Mr. Shea.

Mr.Shea would be ideal as the new Phillip Marlowe and Ms. Robertson would shine in any leading role.

The movie made for cable's Lifetime Channel is indeed a great movie for a girl's night. Rent the original and follow with this contemporary tribute to a classic old movie.
