A hint to marketing and promotions
As season 1 ended...I can't help to plea for more.
This is absolutely an excellent view of Hannibal. Loved the first season...and I think I'll love even more what's coming. I only can say that every episode made me want to see the next one...and the next...and the next. It was so captivating.
The actors play very well their roles...specially Mads Mikkelsen. Never saw his acting before but he really gives us a "Lecter" very sane, very down-to-earthly...very stable...cold...without showing any hint of sociopathy whatsoever. I would risk to say that if Hopkins' Lecter wasn't so perfectly done...Mikkelsen's would be way better. I prefer to describe the two as: Lecter after insanity vs Lector before insanity, respectively.
**Time for a spoiler** The most awkward thing that I found in the series and my favourite part was undoubtedly the banquets held by Lecter.
I was thinking on reviewing the series all over again just to capture those recipes and try to make them for real. Though it's hinted that they were done with human parts...they are astonishingly mouthwatering...and they can be done with common ingredients (we wouldn't need to gut and slice a person to do them).
And with this comes the intent of my review as I make a suggestion to marketing and promotions crew of the series (Grant Okita, as credited):
PLEASE...coming with the 2nd season...release a book of recipes done in the 1st season (and then the others that come after that).
Would be very nice to replicate these recipes in real life, in our kitchens, and Hannibal cooking fans would love to have it, for sure. It should have pictures on set, at Lecter's table and with his dish presentation skills,...maybe main actors reviews of the taste...I surely think that this would really sell and advertise the series better than other means.
Promising at first...disappointing afterward.
The show presented me at first the interesting idea of a CSI/NCIS style show but in "cowboys" era. This was intended at first with Doctor Matthew Freeman (Ato Essandoh) getting evidences and study them with the means available at that time...solving crimes like that. But then they dropped this "motto" to a boring soap opera of pseudo-romantic bad relationships...tons of betrayals...and political interest struggles.
No wonder the show was canceled after 2 seasons...because the second series became quite boring to watch. I confess that still couldn't find the patience to watch the last 4 episodes.
The acting was very good by all of the actors...I particularly liked little Annie Reilly (played by awesome Kiara Glasco). She looks very petite (don't know how old is she IRL)...but she plays her part with so much matureness...that actually she looks like a young woman in a child's body. She is a great actress. Congratulations Kiara, and keep acting, PLEASE.
5 out of 10 why?
1st season 10... 2nd season 0... Therefore... 10/2=5 !
Até Amanhã, Camaradas (2005)
Watched several times already! Yes...it's THAT good!
A six episode mini-series! The DVD pack brings also a last DVD some extras, such as comments of real people that lived those hard years!
This is my favorite fascist regime plot! I think it's passed in the 30's or 40's, something like that! And the story is about the Communist Party's struggle against Salazar's fascist regime and the clandestine world of party members! Surrounds the story of Vaz (Gonçalo Waddington), I see him as Alvaro Cunhal's alter ego! Don't know if that's actually true, but seems like it! It has the best actors you can find! In my opinion the downside in that matter is Leonor Seixas, I don't like her acting at all (she's too freakin' cocky in everything that she does), but that's my opinion, I guess it's not the general idea and she was said to have done a good job as Maria! But the acting of Gonçalo Waddington, Nuno Nunes, Adriano Luz, Sara Graça, Carla Chambel, São José Correia, and others...was perfect...no flaws whatsoever!
The soundtrack with simple musical triad notes is excellent...has that suspense/constant tension touch to it...that makes it perfect for the series! The lighting and scenarios is also a very well picked and directed! Wardrobe, props, etc, all great also!
Joaquim Leitão and Luís Filipe Rocha have done a work of art of this Manuel Tiago's (Alvaro Cunhal) novel!
Not pornography...but paganography!...
...these are the words of Bob Guccione as I saw the documentary! It's Paganography alright! Deep inside we all would love to live in total awareness of sex as the Romans did in the past and see it not as sin but as a natural thing! I'm not going to comment much about the movie itself because only by seeing it...you'll understand all the mystique of the gossip surrounding this movie! And I'll explain my vision why:
Several pornography companies dedicate all their efforts to make tons of money on tons of movies of the same awful background stories with the same porn "actresses"! What should they do is to make what Bob Guccione made with this one...take a script...and make the sex part within that script rules! Therefore they actually would be putting in the market something worthwhile to buy and see...other the same sex positions...the same plots...the same bodies...all the same...same...same old news that people actually buy and they make money out of a no good piece of s***!
Caligola is a good satire movie about the vicissitudes of Roman empire and it's Senate, using sex and senator's wives to put an end to their power without sacrifice! Don't know if Emperor Caligula actually made senator's wives sell their bodies for 5 gold coins as it states in the movie...but sure hell is a way to criticize the corrupt and vulgar ways that one get to conquer power! Caligula (at least in the movie) only tried to actually made the senate sacrifice themselves for the people...as they never did (and unfortunately never will do)!
As for me...I sure liked to see more theatrical paganography in the future! I doubt it ever will happen like this again...but it sure would be awesome to pick up historical figures and make movies of this kind!
I gave it a 6 out of 10 for three reasons: Tinto/Vidal's open war actually made a bad influence in the movie! As it was said (Tinto Brass words) in the DVD I bought...every guy was there for an "egotrip"! Every Penthouse-pet wanted to show off and get in a movie with good acting and good actors such as McDowell and O'Toole and that huge monument of a woman that is Helen Mirren (the cause of me buying this DVD in the first place, as I love her work and her posture, body, face - even after years passed...as an aged woman, she looks wonderful in "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone" a movie that I also recommend)! They really should work as a contribute to that movie and not traveling the "egotrip" train so much! Also because I really thought that the movie has a awful editing job (without the Tinto's hand on it, became another product to sell as much as possible with the largest amount of profit)! As it was said by John Steiner (who played Longinus), Bob Guccione made this movie without costing him anything...and got a profit of hundreds of million dollars! And finally the inaccurate historical facts of Caligula!
It's a fairly good movie, not for all people (as it shows explicit sex), worth to watch (because of the satire involved)! The DVD set includes some good extras about the movie and characters and some things that went really wrong (as the first choice of Drusilla that was going to be played by Maria Schneider, who states that she said to Tinto that she's not a prostitute, but at the same time she came to Caligola's audition right from making money with "the butter scene" of "Ultimo Tango a Parigi" and other sex scenes movies that she was involved in!
Låt den rätte komma in (2008)
Absolutely better than Twillight (contains spoiler)
First of all...if you haven't, you must see this movie! I loved it...the story...the acting...the places where it was played...the props...everything! The little actress Lina Leandersson played it beautifully and superbly! I like her looks too...she's a very cute young girl...with lovely smile! She was perfect for the part, as she has that androgynous look! The actor Kåre Hedebrant work was OK...when he was in the pool I thought he was drowning, he looked like a "fish out of the water"! He also had a dialog mistake when he met Eli in the park, but that's the director's fault that let that error pass! But overhaul, it was OK! And to those frustrated ones that think that this film is child porn, or underage nudity, you are really stupid: To begin with...they are the same age! If you had a girl friend that came to sleep in your bed during the night at that age, you also would say "come right in"! Secondly...it's a movie...not an illegal child porn video (there is no sex, nor even the suggestion of it, and they were not forced to do it)! About the pubic scene...remember...that's part of the story...I even doubt that it's the actress' nude pubic zone, they must've covered her crotch to hide her vagina slit in order to make it look like it was a boy with his genitals severed - you can see the scar (story that you'll find in the book and not in the movie)! That will be my next buy...if I find the damn book! I saw the movie without reading the book, so I didn't get disappointed, I advice you to do the same in order for you to be surprised even more when you read the book! On the romantic side of it...oh man...that is the dream of every young teen...to find a girl (or a boy) to love forever (you also get that feeling in "Bridge to Terabithia" for instance). It's an hymn to teen innocent and pure love, and also friendship trust! My favorite scene is when they have that bloody kiss, right after she killed the man that was going to kill her! We are very used to have Hollywood's view of vampirism and vampire movies, but eastern Europe movies are so much earth like (Nightwatch is also a great movie)! See Twillight for instance: typical rich teen vampire movie that saves the poor human defenseless girl! We never see the other way around...always is vampire boy loving human girl! I was quite happy to see this movie doesn't follow Hollywood's profit example of a "knight shinning armor" vampire for teen girls to sigh all the time for the cute hot actor that plays 1st role! I really loved this movie! 10 points for the story and 10 points to Lina Leandersson...awesome teen actress!
Wild Orchid (1989)
Awesome love game movie!
OK...maybe it's not the best dialog...maybe it's not the best screenplay...maybe it's not several things!
One thing is for sure...I put this movie as one of the best movies I've seen in my life!
There are several reasons for it. First when I was a little boy, I get dreaming that one day I would get rich as Wheeler...that never happened but the thought of being a hot guy in control of several business attract me! Then Wheeler's story itself...the poor guy that fought to live, got so afraid of female kind, the ones that are attracted to success, that started playing games just to keep things interesting (and not just suffer). Then the bad boy look...with the Harley ridding...sensual eyes and body expressions...making girls go nuts about him! A predator! I sure hell dream't to be like him! Then the soundtrack...oh my...the best erotic sounds ever...that main theme breaks me apart! Then you get to see an illusion of a paradisaic landscape...with restaurants that come up with erotic dances, masks and public sex! Then to see the woman you love having sex with another man...the voyeur side of it...but at the same time looking at her and knowing that she only wants to be with you and kind'a connects with you as if they were having sex together and the other guy pounding her doesn't count at all! Then the limousine ridding, seeing a middle aged woman having her burst of animalism with people watching in the next seat...Wheeler once again taking control of the situation having the pair make peace!
Well...you have to see the movie to get the feel of it! But...one last thing...the final scenes when Wheeler finally let go of his control, and hugs her in passion...there's when it get's to me! Well...I tend to see Wheeler as the guy I wanted to be...but I never will!
Mickey Rourke was always one of my favorite actors...and if it weren't for his looks ruined by the ages...I always thought of him to be one of the best if not the best late century's leading role men!
The Hills Have Eyes II (2007)
Again, they picked up the previous crappy plot and made another one
OK...this one is as bad as the first one...gave it a 1 simply hopping that they don't make a third movie!!
This one they send a bunch of looser troopers that make stupid mistakes...put them in a truck and send them to a A-Bomb test facilities! Suposedly USA want the best people on these kind of jobs, no? They arrive...that precise instant the generator runs out of gas!! Then the guy wants to crap (seems that it is a first thought arriving to a place where we go to work)!! Hum...something moves in the potty...again...no worries...it must been a fly swimming in the pool of crap!! He doesn't even get up!! Second time, OK...a hand comes out...cool...he rushes out...get to call the girl...and she goes look in the potty...hum...real close...to have a clear view of something that moved (predict something is going to happen here)!! And now...after the guy is dead...they don't call the sarge back (where are the walkie talkies??? I supposed a military team usually stays always in contact with their commander in chief)!! Now the rifles are gone...hum...these monsters (suposely should be weak and dead from the amount of radiation they received) sure are quick...celerity at the extreme, because they aren't seen...even when the crapper is some feet away from the radio table where the 2 troopers where...and the rifles just so happen to disappear!!
Well...I'm writing this as I'm seeing the movie...so my comment goes this far...I just don't know if I'm going to finish watching it...sure hope this changes a bit...but still...it's again a stupid horror movie!!
If you are a fan of horror movies...you can watch this (no harm done)...but I'm sure you've saw astonishingly better than this!! Beyond comparison!! To me...absolutely disappointing the first one...and the second...well...did not improve until now!!
The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
One of the stupidest horror films ever made
I gave this a 5 for the excellent actor work...but that's pushing it as far as I can!! I mean...this movie is full of stupid things, all of them quite noticeable!!...starting with the fact that no one exposed to radiation would survive that long but beside that...no one in their right mind would travel through the desert and in the middle of no where, turn to an unknown rock road with a trailer!! All the tires blown of but they don't suspect that something's fishy here!! First order of business...the young girl (usually a freaking cheerleader like hot girl) decides to sunbathe!! A guy goes one way to find help, finds a crater with a village made of mannequins and a crap load of wrecked cars...hum...let's find freebies instead...again...this looks very normal to a supposedly intelligent person!! The amount of ammo waisted randomly is absolutely astonishing!! Nobody notices people inside the trailer? and the incredible time spent putting the fire out, when someone needs help in the trailer!! Then a guy went to find his kid, finds a lot of monsters, but doesn't do anything...simply stupid...finally he decides to put one out...but he's still in doubt!! And what's the point?? The monsters need food is that it?? why they never left the area?? At least in protest against the government testing caused this thing!! They choose revenge by feeding of other people's intestines (yup...not flesh...guts only)!! O well...again...one of the stupidest horror movie plots ever made!! But the acting was OK...tough luck the plot was really really bad!!
Black Snake Moan (2006)
One of the best movies from this year!
I really think this movie deserves some Oscars! I really don't care what people can say badly about this movie...because it's a really well played parts from Samuel L. Jackson, and mainly by Christina Ricci!! I'm a big fan of hers, right since I saw her in Addams Family...been trying to watch all things she makes, and this is absolutely one of the best parts she played!! I love her looks (even though people say she's not pretty...I think she is...and I love her eyes)!! The movie is about many things...people say that is religious...people say that it's about racism...people say that is about drugs...people say that is about nymphomania...well...maybe is a little bit of all that!! But what I truly feel is that this movie has a high level of eye opening for what blues is...what it stands for...and mainly were it comes from: life...heart...pain...sorrow...and above all...spontaneous feelings!! I hope you get to see it...if you are that kind of person that likes a movie not only from the pictures or the story it tells...this is a good movie to see...if your not...well...see it anyway...cant hurt that much, and you get to see Christina Ricci acting so horny!! She's a fox!!
Soldier's Girl (2003)
A well put vision of what really happens with military forces!
I saw this movie yesterday on TV!! I was quite impressed by the performance of Troy Garity and specially Lee Pace!! I gave it a 10 because it is really a good movie, showing us a silenced side of the US military men!! I confess that I cant stand the idea of being with another man, or a transsexual for that matter, but that's my sexual preference, what I don't understand is why the hell it's required that all soldiers must be straight!! This movie show us that, homosexualism also exists on the military, whether you like it or not!! Besides...as it says in the film...as long as your life isn't afected...everybody has their right of a private life...and in it...they can do what they want!! That is the true freedom of thought!! If some soldiers worry more with themselves or their personal lifes...maybe wouldn't be so many wars in the world!! I'm not saying that every soldier is gay or should be...nothing like that...I'm just acusing that "war machine" idea that it's imposed to all soldiers...making them not thinking by themselves but what's good for the team!! This leads to death...way before war actually happens!!
I again bring up the performance of Lee Pace...he really plays the part with excelency above average!!
