Beowulf & Grendel (2005)
No ordinary troll under the bridge
Shown at this year's Seattle International Film Festival and held over due to popularity, this film is an absolute fascination to those who, like myself, enjoy legends of heroes from far away as well as those from right here at home. Splendidly acted by all, especially by Gerard Butler who my opinion turns out the best performance of his career so far as Beowulf. The cinematography is gorgeous and the action sequences, while not as sustained as I had hoped for, are none the less delightfully wild. The story of the troll itself is handled with far more than the usual "troll bad, human good" touch, with many of the scenes eliciting a moment of compassion for the troll's pained existence. This is not a film for the kiddies though, so parents take note. For everyone else, it's a great ride through a classic legend.
