Approaching the Unknown (2016)
The spacecraft is full of items that no-one would take (or be allowed to take) into space. A wooden box, with rusty metal clips, full of old garage tools (really). Masses of paper of different forms from spiral binder books to post-it notes.
Finally when the story gets way too boring for even the writers - they spend minute after minute on shots of what can only be described as glitter in colored water. Is this intended to be a special effect of space?
And his space suite is a joke - a cheap backpack, dish wash-up gloves, and some shorts over some white overalls.
Horribly lacking in story, fact, and props.
All Is Lost (2013)
Just one stupid action after another for an hour and a half
Story barely hangs together. Boat holed, bad weather coming, and this "resourceful" sailor - has a shave. Tries to get the radio to work on the deck - leave it there, while he goes and gets boozed. Seemed to be a candidate for a Darwin Award more than a movie plot. To top it off he lights an open fire in the life raft. I'm not sure what the definition of resourceful sailor is but it sure is not either smart or well planned. I have sailed for many years and this movie was just so unlike any sailor I have ever met. They are usually resourceful and well planned, particularly when issues occur. He had more than enough resources to get him out of trouble but continued to take half measures and put himself back in harms way. A disappointing watch.
Lame Storyline which undermines the story
The characters in the "game" all appear to be in on the story-line keeping it moving. So the parts they are playing as guests in a reality show are just not believable. They arrive with just the cloths on their backs - but continue to have wardrobe changes. They have opportune moments of inspiration that keep the story headed in the way its SCRIPTED, just way too often. It just gets too fake. A weak disconnected script that just has so many holes the characters themselves seem unbelievable, even the ones playing parts of embedded actors in the reality game don't seem real. Soon they are all just actors playing parts in a pantomime story. When they give their life story - it gathers little interest - its just an actor spouting a story about some fictional past. While this is true for many shows you feel they are the part - not just pretending to be. Bad script or bad acting? I think a lot is the former.
