Superman II (2006)
Despite the flaws Donner's version is the Definitive Superman II
I had seen Richard Lester's version of Superman II when it first came out in theaters in 1981 and I thought it was good. But after reading about and buying Richard Donner's cut of II, there is no comparison. Donner's version is much better! When I saw the history of Superman DVD, it told of the back story of Superman I & II, and how Richard Donner was fired by the Salkinds and how they (the Salkinds) brought Richard Lester in to finish production on II.
I agree that Donner's version makes the villains look more menacing where as in Lester's version it makes them out to be buffoons. I also liked the restored footage of Marlon Brando as Jor-El, replacing Susannah York from the Lester version. The scenes between Kal-El and Jor-El in the fortress first when Kal-El renounces his powers because of his love for Lois Lane, then returning ashamed and guilt-ridden to get them back after learning of the villains' presence on Earth were heart felt. Kudos to Christopher Reeve for his brilliant acting in these scenes, same for Marlon Brando.
The restoration of Kal-El's powers in Donner's version seem to make more sense than in the Lester version where he just finds the green energy crystal, picks it up and watches it, along with the audience, glow brighter and then, BOOM! he's Superman again! That was a cop out.
Still, the end where Superman turns the world back to erase everyones' memories of the villains' presence, except his, of course, didn't make sense, considering the Clark goes back to that diner and gives the trucker, Rocky, a taste of his own medicine. Though the scene was funny, it didn't make sense unless he somehow managed to not reverse THAT incident. Still, As in my summary title, despite the flaws, Donner's version is better.
