Get a Life (1990)
Somewhere in the early nineties a Dutch TV station bought a dozen of episodes of Get a Life and it was one of the funniest, if not THE funniest thing I have ever seen. I remember a few years later I even wrote to the TV station to beg for reruns (but never heard from them). Apparently not many people (in the Netherlands) liked it. The funny thing is though, that the good friends I have had, when I mentioned Get a Life, they have freaked out; they say it's one of the best things they ever saw! So do I have a specific taste in friends? :-) Weird! I am currently trying to get it from the U.S. on DVD cos needless to say it's not released in Europe. I so hope I get it cos it was so awesome! Everybody should watch it at least once when given the chance cos it's quite unique and if it IS your kind of thing, you probably will never see anything funnier.
Don't waste your time on this one
This must have been one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The dialogues were so bad and unnatural and the main characters were so stupid and superficial that it totally seemed like a soft-porn movie without the porn. Best example of this is when a policeman they just meet, starts feeling up one of the girls in the police station. It might be because the script/dialogue whatever was so bad, but the women in the main parts were really boring. They made David Boreanaz, who I normally can't stand, suddenly look like the most interesting person you could think of. Only the last few minutes were a bit bearable, but you don't want to sit through 90 minutes of this to get there.
Good in its sort
Although sometimes the characters act a bit dumb (like taking a swim by themselves somewhere in a river in the middle of the Amazone) and therefore get a bit annoying, it was still a nice and good film in its kind with nice settings (although to me not totally credible as being in the Amazone, but then hey, I've never been there) and underwater scenes of a kind that I have never seen in a black and white movie before. They alone make the film worth it.
Meet the Parents (2000)
Comedy the way I like it
It's quite rare for me to really laugh at a comedy because most of the time the jokes are too lame, mega-predictable, sometimes too vulgar or just not funny for whatever reason. But this one... I can't remember the last movie that made me laugh so much... brilliant! To me, only one joke was really predictable and just waiting to happen. The rest was, in my opinion quite original and totally hit the right tone. I can't believe how much fuss was made when "There's Something about Mary" came out. The humor in that film was so much 'cheaper'...this film was classier and way, way better.
The only reasons to not walk out of the cinema tonight were the images themselves, and curiosity of what had once gone on in the house long ago. For the rest the movie was incredibly annoying. The people in this movie are completely unrealistic in their behaviour to the point you wanna scream. A family moves to some old house and it is totally unclear why, what, and how. It has something to do with the grandfather, but why they have really moved away from America, does not become clear. A mother totally ignores her teenage daughter, even her requests for a simple conversation. A little boy sits on the floor and seems to be drawing 24/7, he sees pencils roll by themselves, has miniature carousels in his room that start turning by themselves and he gets beaten up by entities every night but doesn't say a word about it to anyone. Mum doesn't seem to care how he gets the bruises. The girl, at the moment she just discovers that the house is some kind of temple for the occult, sends everyone away so she can investigate the house all by herself in the middle of the night. The woman seems to have some sort of mental disorder as well cos not only can't she see that her husband is acting insane, she never looks after her children once, the girl is looking after her little brother all the time. And I could go on and on.
The first half was very boring, but past the middle it got nice and interesting, despite the abnormal unnatural behavior of the characters. But the end was a bit unclear to me and could be considered half-open.
I wouldn't really recommend this film, there are much better ones in this genre and with more satisfying endings I guess. I heard the whole cinema go 'what? - what kind of f*ing end is that?!' so it wasn't just me. And any comparison to 'The Others' I don't understand....no important similarities whatsoever.
