Iron Sky (2012)
Let me first say, that I'm not exactly unbiased. From the moment I saw the trailer and read the back-story of how this movie was funded, I really wanted Iron Sky to succeed. So when I finally did manage to get a ticket to one of the rare showings in the Netherlands expectations were definitely high. So for what it's worth, here a my two cents ..
On some levels the movie could be considered a huge failure. I personally believe they made a wrong decision from the start when they decided the tone of the film. When you make a movie like this you have two options: 1, to make it a serious action/sci-fi movie with comedy undertones. 2. make it a comedy parody of a sci-fi/action movie. Unfortunately the makers of iron sky chose for the latter. This is a mistake. We do not need to apologize to want to see a movie about space Nazi's. The Nazi's have already been used as comic book style villains in plenty of movies. Like 'Raiders Of The Lost Ark' and 'Hell Boy' to name a few. So unfortunately, instead of the camp seriousness of a James Bond we get the camp silliness of Austin Powers.
And then we have the rest of the script. If you strip away the fantastic premise the story in itself is not very engaging. Some of the jokes made me personally cringe. An impromptu airlock striptease being one of them. Even thought they have a couple of nice ideas. Most scenes feel really underdeveloped. This is the same problem in most of the action scenes.. They are very short and sometimes over in a second. So they fail to create any form of tension or excitement whatsoever. The ending itself is rather anticlimactic, since the fabled ship the Gotterdammerung is never used to it's fullest effect.
Okay so much for the bitching. On to the good stuff. Even though the script feels rather clunky, It does add to the B-movie style that we've come to love from these kind of movies. And when the comedy works, it works really well. There are some terrific jokes in the film. And especially some of the political jokes are sometimes quite intelligent.
The acting is okay. Udo Kier, does what he always does. (looks menacing and plain evil) ,and is rather effective at it. Julia Dietze is very enjoyable as our heroine and she looks great in her Nazi outfits. Which brings us to the biggest plus. The look of the movie. which is nothing short of a triumph. The special effects, The costumes and the sets, all work so well for such a small budget film that you sometimes are at risk of standing up and applauding them half way through the film. Sure they are not as crisp as the next Michael Bay action movie, but who cares. Everything works so well, from the gritty industrial wonder which is the "Gotterdammerung" to the stark beauty and comic ridiculousness of the white house set. When Peta Sargeant walks onto the bridge of the "U.S.S. George W. Bush" clad in skintight leather as a dominatrix version of captain Janeway. It is clear we have left the realm of reason and reality behind. But what a hoot! Particular mention should be made of the final shot, which is nothing less then a work of genius.
So what should we make of Iron Sky. Yes it is a flawed movie, yes it could have been so much better. But, yes, it is also a total triumph in so many ways. Don't go and see it if you're a serious movie buff, but you can't afford to miss it if you like sci-fi and B-movies in general. I was sitting in the cinema completely enjoying myself, the audience around me was audibly agreeing. And I can assure you that everybody left that cinema with a huge smile on their face, because they knew they had just seen something special.
Galaxy Quest (1999)
Why is this movie so damn good!
Okay reading through all of the rest reviews, you find that the vast mayority of the comments find this movie hilarious, funny , terrific
"I coun't stop laughing" can be read quite a few times. Hey i will not argue with you on that one. But what makes this movie so damn good
first of all you've got a great script. witch really is brilliant in it's simplicity. 'cast of of B sci-fi actors get called on by aliens to save the galaxy.' There, you've got the hole movie in one sentence! (and I bet you smiled when you read it!)
Now this idea could go really corny if it wasn't for the nice character development. on the outside they seem the plastic fantastic tv-persona's we all know. but in real live they loathe eachother. wich we al know can make for wonderfully funny scenes second this script doesn't take itself to serious, wich is good! because no person in the world is going to believe this as a true story. so we don't get any of those horrible moral undertones.
second combined with great actors like Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman, who I both worship! (but that on a more personal note!) Really also have fun with their characters. they know these people are fake,("I've got one job one this lousy ship, it's stupid. But i'm gonna do it! Okay!") they make fun at that, and themselves as actors. (the method acting scene with rickman wich was cut from the movie is quite brilliant because it makes fun at the very thing most of these people base their careers on!)
thirdly everything about this movie is so recogniceable, iven if you haven't seen star trek you will get this movie, there are hardly, if any 'inside' jokes if it spoofs anything star trek it spoofs the way non star trek fans look at the series and their fans!
We've got wonderfull conventions with die hard fans looking completly retarded in woderfully precise (but still not entirely accurate!) costumes. The characters of the strange doctor, the butch captain and the artificial aliens. the continuity errors and plotholes in the scrip ("Why is this here, it makes no logical sense!")
Combined with some of the best special effects, sets and make-up money can buy, Great scenes (The beginning and end are brilliant!) and wonderfull dialogue mixed with some of the funniest one-liners this side of the galaxy make this one hell of a film
since no film is perfect i give it a 9 out of 10
Cecil B. DeMented (2000)
More from this please! Mister Waters.....Yum!
I thought this film was great! John waters created some fabulous characters who ridicule the everyday Hollywood, and not just the movies, also the talentless bitch actors and actresses who's only talent it is to smile and look pretty.
Cecile B. Demented is our anti-hero, he ridicules what we know is ridiculous but accept anyway. We all know that the average family movie is overtly romantic, or overtly sweet beyond the point of realism. We know this but we love them anyway. Not to Cecile..this is s*** and it should be treated as s***! With his army of slightly deranged people, They attack good old family values, by kidnapping glitzy Hollywood brunette actress Honey Whitlock, who not only becomes a blond, but a willing accomplice to Cecile. Because being bad feels just so good!!
John Water loves to do things completely different from Hollywood, so in his movie he especially goes after to destroying those last bastions of family value (a.k.a. old people, children, invalids).
Great acting, and some great comedy moments make this a wickedly funny movie, although not for everyones taste. I loved it and give it a ten!
