The Abyss (1989)
Lots of fun
The movie was lots of fun to watch. Time went fast, and before I knew it, the movie was over. I enjoyed how the story continued to be energetic and the actors kept the action rolling. I thought the special effects were really cool also. I liked the story and directing too.
SPOILER ON THE WAY..
I liked how he brought back the girl from death after they made their way back to the big station (don't quit). I thought it was fake that they went down so deep without getting crushed. I also thought the end where the city came up was like Dr. Doolittle's snail which made me laugh.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
How can a movie be better?
This was such a great film. It was done with such beautiful design, such symmetry. I love the way the classical music tied in with the classical art of earth, space and beyond. It was such a fluent, and thought provoking masterpiece. I loved the way the monoliths never changed, although primate, earth and space did. I loved how it was a question of "Do you need me/us now"? The movie expressed desire, peace, love, curiosity, finesse, gentleness, courage and innocence. What more could you ask for from a mere movie? Perhaps a complement movie. Any appreciator of 2001: A Space Odyssey will find the movie 2010 is 2001's complement movie. 2010 is more story orientated than 2001.
A Raisin in the Sun (1961)
Strong and Moving
This movie shows that dreams really do come true America. In spite of the hardships and extreme humility this family has faced, still, it pushes forward. This family does not stop in spite of losing the Dad. The family doesn't stop when the very ball chain that slows them, further pulls. The family sticks together and gives other support and holds back anger as possible. The family works together and moves forward together. The patriotism and the boldness makes this a great film. I love how it shows that dreams in America change-from a desire for independence to a desire for financial gain. It actually sets up the viewer to ask this question: ?what dreams are yet to come in America for us, the Americans?
The Defiant Ones (1958)
Perfect except for ending
I think this movie was awesome. It flew by. I really enjoyed the way the racial harmony was improved throughout the film. I enjoyed watching the two physically struggle through many different kinds of terrain. I thought was great the way they found people along the way that took pity upon them and cared. In spite of the fact that they were criminals, still, I could easily relate to their situation. The acting was superb and is worthy of a great movie watching session. One thing that got me was that Caucasians at least in that era could be so damn insensitive toward Negroids. The movie culminates nicely to the end where they are so close to achieving their goal. Where the racial harmony finally strikes a chord at the end of the film and the musical ending was a nice touch.. still, I would have like them to end leaving on the train. I leaving on the train together after the handhold had instead worked.. I think this would have been an equally fine racial ending, with the added ethical question of have they paid enough for their crimes
Monterey Pop (1968)
Now this is what a rock festival is all about. Just imagine seeing the top performers of the 60s all in one concert. This was it. Complete with camping on the scene and drugs. This is what the 60s was all about-hippies and great music. If you like 60s rock, then this flick runs fast and is really great. I think this is the kind of movie you ought watch every once in a while if you are a rock fan-because this is a classic-like Woodstock. Hendrix is awesome and don't forgot Ravi Shankar on sitar. Joplin is really good-so is Grace Slick. The mix of performers is great. The only thing better than watching this movie might be to attend such a festival-it must've been great.
A Shot in the Dark (1964)
Ha! This movie is great!
This movie is a crack-up. I love the character of Clouseau! This funny character that brilliant Peter Sellers came up with will keep the normal person laughing, grinning and at least entertained throughout the film.
The movie is wonderful how it sets up the bumbling Clouseau. The straight faced actors beside Clouseau keep you anticipating another nutty move by the inspector. Over and over the film just sets up Clouseau to improvise his way to success. It's just plain fun.. that's all.. fun. The continuity of the film is wonderful-it just flows along. Also the plot is very intriguing-you don't know exactly who the killer is until the end.. The way Clouseau p***es off the chief is also great. Then there is his assistant Cato. There's a wonderful part of the film where Clouseau takes out Maria. It's just a fun film, worth seeing!
Five Easy Pieces (1970)
Nice Fine Art
I think this movie is best analyzed around fine and especially the classical musician. This movie was great in that in helped clear up reasoning of a dilemna of the great master musicians such as Chopin. You as the composer are alone in your music and it is your own. However to be remembered after your death, others must perform your music. Like a wanderer, the future musician is yet to be born and yet being thought of while the music is being composed. The musician is to carried along hitching rides on Chopin's trip-cared for. Or is Chopin hitching the rides? Is he catching the rides of the future musicians playing his music? This movie helps analyze these questions.
The subtile symbolism in the movie is well done as well. Lumber truck-> Piano wood.. Oil Rig-> oiled wood.. The wood (and oil) is being used-on a "trip" too with the music. I feel that Nicholson's character in this movie, almost like a "whore" of the "pimp" music and it made him feel bound and enslaved. On the other hand, this was what the character was also like this.. kind of an adventuresome type and yet living in respect for the (classical) music, thus allowing it to guide him. The character seemed to be enjoying his life and seemed to feel as though he had control over the music. This was what was good about this movie. Perhaps if the character tried writing his own music it would help in analyzing Chopin? It's an interesting movie..and very thought provoking. If you appreciate fine art, then this movie is worth viewing.
Citizen Kane (1941)
Public idiotic or smart
Wells has fooled the public again or not? Wells is a brilliant director and actor. In this movie, he has masterly used a movie plot to weave a puzzle. The answer to the puzzle is revealed at the end of the movie. You either catch the answer to the mystery of Rosebud, or you are left an idiot as so many others apparently have who have reviewed this movie on this site. Rosebud is mentioned throughout the movie and it is only logical to find out what Rosebud is. TO UNDERSTAND CITIZEN KANE.. FIND OUT WHAT ROSEBUD IS!!!!
Rosebud is magic, innocense, and power. Without Rosebud, this movie is perhaps a flop.. and this, is what Wells did-to you the viewer.. you the public.. because.. Wells is.. a mysterious (War of the Worlds) artist.
This was a genuinely touching film. It is very sensitive in telling how the horse started out innocent, and peaceful and how people mistreated it, or didn't quite understand it very often. I was impressed by how I could see the feelings of the horse itself. The horse had this fantastic will, and I identified with that and it was intriguing. When the horse did well in the jumping shows and kept doing better and better.. I cheered. When the end part came-I was ecstastic with joy!! It was such a great story.. I had to look it up on the web and write about it. I found on the web it's a true story too-which makes it all the more great. I strongly suggest all watch this classic-it won an Academy Award in 1960.
Rookie of the Year (1993)
I thought it was a fantastically funny movie. I laughed so hard at time-it was a blast! I really enjoyed the idea of the movie. I had never picked up on such an idea as a young boy making it to the majors.. I imagine that it is an idea that many major leaguers had thought about before the movie was made. Is it why the Cubbies hardly ever make to the Series?? -because they got a soft spot for their fans? Anyway, the movie is a lot of fun. There isn't a whole lot you can do with such an idea, although I think it was done very well.
I especially enjoyed how fast he made it to the majors. It was just like that. Wow what an arm.
I liked the way the child actor portraying the youngster who made the Cubs-the way he was so innocent in such a stressful position-it just added to the laughs.
Overall, I think that it was a well done flick and if you want some fun and something to think about.. then this is the movie for you!
