Lists by PimpinAintEasy
A list of the 50 best (or my favorite) Malayalam movies from the late 70s until 2011. Some of the films may be classified as slightly commercial - example :Kaalapani. Most of the films are post-1975. I have little awareness of the Malayalam cinema before the 70s. Some of these movies really had some interesting story lines. But what I really like about the movies mentioned in the list are that they have little or no Hollywood or European influences. They are distinctly Malayali in their haphazardness.
The 80s and the 90s witnessed the emergence of some of Malayalam cinema's best commercial filmakers - I.V.Sashi, Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikaad, Joshi, Sibi Malayayil, Kamal, Padmarajan, Bharathan, K.G.George etc. Mammootty and Mohanlal dominated Malayalam cinema from the early 80s until the early 2000s. So this list is heavy with their films. I am not too fond of post-2000s Malayalam cinema. Most of the films in this list are from the 80s and the 90s. And a lot of the films are slapstick comedies.
Great directors often have relatively little known early films in their filmography that exhibit their raw talent and point of view. Sometimes, these films could be more interesting than their more famous later works.
Movies that are characteristic of American culture, civilization, attitudes etc and also sort of encompasses the dark side of America. I'm trying to list movies that make America seem attractive to a foreigner/ someone who has never been there but has only experienced it through the movies.
Actresses who are so beautiful and have so much character and talent that you wonder why they were not in more movies. Or in better ones.
You know them. Those brilliant supporting actors who make a huge impact in some big star vehicle. They could also be guys who seemed to be destined for greatness at the beginning of their career but things did not work out. Andy Garcia, Ray Liotta and Matt Dillon are just a little too popular to make this list.
Just 10 movies that come to mind when I think about drinking.
You know the kind! You are sitting there in the movie hall waiting for things to improve but the film is fatigue inducing.
I am sure most of you will not agree with the number one movie on this list. But Mammootty was just sensational in Sangham. I do not know many of the films he made in the early 80s. I am sure some of them should have been on this list. And there is only one film from his post-2000s filmography. I have not watched Sukritham which I have heard is a classic.
I did not have trouble choosing 50 films from a filmography of more than 300 titles (and Lalettan is my favorite actor). There are a few potentially controversial omissions like Bharatham, Thenmavin Kombath and some of Lalettan's overrated post 2000 films which are pretty unbearable :) (I am sure true fans of Malayalam cinema would agree with me). I also do not remember much of G. Aravnidan's Vaasthuhara, so I have excluded that one as well. Please post your comments, bouquets and brickbats :).
