The Mystic (1925)
A rare Tod Browning movie
A good Tod browning movie but without Lon Chaney. Anyway, the story sounds here quite strange and dark. Mystery and drama fans will be delighted by this story of a young eastern european woman hired to the new world. This one is quite rare on TV, so if you can don't miss it !
Napoleon auf St. Helena (1929)
The emperor's last days
Here we got a another german gem from the twenties. But nothing surnatural here. The last months of Napoléon's life are here described. It's also the fall of a beaten man, left by everyone exerpt a fistful of true friends who go with him on the small island St Helena. The director of the movie, Lupu-Pick, was totally fond of making silent work. So it's not surprising that he comitted suicide when movies began to talk.
Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
A must see for every law student
Indeed this is a typical "court movie" but much better than all the scenes that can be seen in nowadays movies. There is no useless emphasis from the lawyer or the judge. We get the whole view of a trial in the USA from the beginning to the end. That point is very interesting. The duel between James Stewart and the other lawyer turns really into a man-to-man fight in order to discover the truth. But the most surprising comes at the end. What a rude world !
Le tunnel (1933)
From the USA to Europe
It's quite surprising to see Jean Gabin as an engineer directing the work of a tunnel between the USA and Europe. However, the story is well turned with many protagonists surrounding that project. We also have the pleisure to see Gustav Gründgens playing an ugly character. The project may sound a little bit irrealistic but everything is fine in that movie so why should we complain ?
Touchez pas au grisbi (1954)
Nostalgia of old times
Old gangsters want to hide their "grisbi" (the booty in french slang language) from another gang. They have to face the competition from a younger local caïd (Lino Ventura). More than a gangster, it tells the friendship between men and the vanishing of the old world and its honorous gangsters. A special attention to the harmonica music which suits here very well.
Maigret tend un piège (1958)
Best adaption of Simenon
Maigret is looking after a women killer in Paris. It's the occasion to see some places from the old Paris. Jean Gabin is really fit for the role of Maigret. Hopefully it's not a movie where the whole action takes place in a police office. In that film you can also see a young beginner named Lino Ventura.
Les grandes familles (1958)
The money first, the family in second
A good overview of what is an influent french family in the fifties. Money and power are ruling everything by these kind of people. The cast is excellent with a great tandem Gabin-Blier. There are also some personal troubles with other members of the family.
Mélodie en sous-sol (1963)
Nervous and full of tension
An old gangster (Jean Gabin) wants to plan a last robbery before retiring. He asks a young man (Alain Demon) met in jail for a partner. The story may look classical but it's played very fine. The most interesting thing in this movie is the dialogue by Michel Audiard. It's amazing ! As good as ever, so watch this film in french language.
It's also the farewell to an old world which disappears little by little because the time of old gangsters is over. It's also funny to hear the characters talk in french postwar slang language.
The Godfather: Part II (1974)
Great family !
The lives of Vito Corleone and his son are told here with brio. The family has to face different kind of problems with traitors and justice. The reaction of the family is a fair to the reputation of of mafia gangs. It's very difficult to distinguish Robert de Niro from Al Pacino, so don't get lost with the different times and scenes ! A very good movie.
Les Barbouzes (1964)
THE great spies parody movie
You can do nothing but laugh when you watch this one : spies from different countries try to get some plans owned by a rich man who died recently. The most important thing is the actors playing : this latter are at they best (Lino Ventura, Bernard Blier, Francis Blanche, Noel Roquevert, Robert Darban). Watch the movie on french to appreciate the actors speaking talent !
