Legally Blonde (2001)
This was a very cute movie. Reese Witherspoon's performance was fantastic... not award winning, but very fun to watch. What really hurt this movie was the court room scenes. They were shot with such a disregard for court room proceedings that it ended up being very distracting. Otherwise, the movie was very fun to watch.
Kôkaku Kidôtai (1995)
It took dedication to get through this movie. Its pace is so slow that it put me to sleep the first time I tried to watch it. The second time was a fight, but I made it through. My girlfriend fell asleep both times. In fact, she is still asleep as I type this!!
The story takes a full hour to get interesting. Once it did, the movie again takes numerous nonsensical turns into weird musical montages. Maybe something is lost in the translation from Japanese. Finally, the animation is very coarse... difficult to watch compared to modern technology.
In short, this movie is a good story that was simply poorly executed.
Breaking Away (1979)
This is one of my all-time favorite flicks. I watch "Breaking Away" any time it is on TV. The main character (Dave) is bordering on being clinically disturbed with his obsession with cycling, but is someone you route for. The 'world' he has created in his head is a place that might be nice to visit. You almost don't want him to join the rest of us in reality. You laugh with his insanity. You cry with his disappointments. You yearn for him to succeed. You are proud when he embraces his legacy or does the right thing without considering the consequence.
Notwithstanding its widespread appeal, this movie is notably special for cyclists... a 'must see' movie. I see pieces of Dave in many of my fellow cyclists... obsession, escapism, loyalty, denial, defeat, and triumph. However, you need not be a cyclist to enjoy this flick. The Oscar nomination should be proof of that. If you are a cyclist, "American Flyers (1985)" (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0088707) is also a 'must see' movie. It isn't nearly as polished or engaging as "Breaking Away", but enjoyable nonetheless.
American Movie (1999)
don't see this movie
This movie sucked wind. I imagine that the other 300 people that gave this movie such high votes must be independent filmmakers. I can't imagine that anyone else could possibly find it funny or even slightly entertaining. I feel like 100 minutes of my life were just wasted.
