Combat Shock (1984)
A world full of dirt, ugliness and pain!!
I love this movie!!! Not even though it is cheap and rough-made but BECAUSE of it. In a Big-Budget-Box-Office-Seller this story would not work.
Combat Shock's style is very aggressive and direct. The way of telling the story is very slow. There's no beautiful cinematography. The story is simple. The actors are not very pretty.
Nevertheless it worked. It is very disturbing!! A good-mood-killer!!! But why are we watching movies??? Not to see!! But to FEEL!!! I want to cry, to laugh, to get shocked or to disgust. I want to feel that, what the actors seem to feel. Even if they feel bad. Most movies with a "just-want-to-entertain"-intention are a waste of time. Last but not least they will bore you.
This movie doesn't!! If you're able to watch a movie without counting goofs or discussing the cheap F/X it will be a journey into the land of hopelessness.
In the latest movie directed by Buddy Giovinazzo ("No way home")he had more money, a better crew, an excellent cast and better technical conditions. And it became a good movie. But the strength and roughness of Combat Shock has gone away.
Sometimes it is better when a director has no money.
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Beware!! This movie is a perfect manipulation...
I read some of the other comments to Cannibal Holocaust and it is very disappointing that you can categorize most of the viewers into two parts:
1. Gorehounds!! They were bored. They just like movies with guts and gore!! If the movie they watch is well-made does not matter!! Just splatter!!! Don't call them lovers of the cinema!!! Poor!!!
2. People who liked the movie and try to explain (apologize?)why!!! "The animal-snuff-scenes were fake or the animals had been already dead", "It's disgusting but it has a message", "It is interesting because Blair-Witch is told the same way"....
This movie is made by one of the masters of Euro-exploitation in the 70s. And it is pure exploitation. There is no "message". There is no fake.
All animals were harmed for real. They were killed for this movie. The Savages who supported this movie ate them later on. But they ate them everyday. Not only when the movie was made!! What are you eating each day? Have you watched a butcher at work?
And a Message??? Ruggero Deodato had private problems in the late 70s. He was frustrated and in a very dark mood. So he wanted to create a very aggressive movie (it worked!!). Just because of some conventions and to make Canibal Holocaust more cynical he put in some footage about the jungle/city-comparison.
Wake up guys!! This is not Tim Robbins!! This is Italy, the 70's, Ruggero Deodato!! Everything was possible in those days!
C.H. is a masterpiece of exploitation, it is a perfect manipulation of the audience, it does not try to satisfy the dumb splatterfreaks but it wants to shock and to entertain you!! Not more, not less!!
Romantic Zeitgeist at its best!!!
Next to the brilliant making of this movie and five actors who obviously like the plot, their roles and the director(?), this movie is one of the best in showing the way of living in the romantic era. ... No not showing!! It LIVES it!!! There are so many details in costumes, dialogues and situations which are typical for this period in the early 19th century, that only someone who loves the romantic era could build such a work of art!!!
Movies like "Sleepy Hollow" or "Interview with a Vampire" are beautiful and sweet!!! But it's a TODAY-view!! They are not really romantic or gothic but stereotype (Anyway!! I like them!!)
Besides all that, it is interesting that this night described in "Gothic" which really happend, was some kind of "birth of modern horror"!
Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, we all know!! But Polidoris Story "The Vampire" he wrote under the impressions of that night became a very famous gothic-novel of it's time. It is suggesting, that even Bram Stoker read it later on before writing HIS famous vampire-novel. So two of the basic horror-myths (Dracula and Frankenstein) had their roots in that night!!
Ken Russel is well-known in showing us historical themes (like The Music Lovers, The Devils, Lisztomania etc.)!! Gothic is less bizarre than the others movies. But it has been the right decision, because now the story and the actors have enough place to build a kaleidoscope of romantic and gothic visions and situations. It is the story that fascinates and not only the way of telling it!
Watch it!! Enjoy the dialogues!! Is it E.A.Poe, is it Ch.Beaudelaire or Byron or Shelley themselves?? No it is just a screenplay!!
For me it is 10/10!!!
