Deadly Intent (2016)
Good film if you are having problems falling asleep
My quick rating - 2,6/10. I am on a roll today. Another boring movie, this time with a ghost of a father killed during wartime coming back to reclaim his son. Stuff falls off shelves, toys move around, things go missing....seems like what happens in everyones house, really. This big huge ordeal (read the IMDb plot, makes it sound like it is) is just there. Since the ghost is evil, I guess the entity is a better word. But in the end, this is just dumb. Bonus point for the scene where the mother tries to use a makeshift ouija board out of a household glass and the words yes and no written on paper. They should've used cgi for that to make this movie more ridiculous. The bad part is, I bet the film makers actually were trying to be serious about this film. I am serious when I say, don't waste your time unless you are related to someone involved in it.
Andròn: The Black Labyrinth (2015)
Trivia sums it up "shot in 21 days"
My quick rating - 3,2/10. Well, not the WORST movie I have ever seen, but pretty awful. A group of really bad actors I mean, slaves, are put in some dungeon and must fight there way out. They call it a maze yet always seem to know where things are. Anyway, the group faces a madman (Alec Baldwin, who must've lost a bet and dragged Danny Glover into this mess) that is trying to eliminate their spirit for a game show? I think I have it right. Hard to tell but for some reason the "bad guys" who can shoot lightning from their hands and morph their bodies tend to resort to fist fighting for no apparent reason. Of course, a couple of the detainees are poor martial artists, but that goes without saying (or they are good martial artists who are choreographed so poorly that their sensai will be furious this was ever filmed). I really don't know if their is much redeeming about this movie and if I didn't use gut instinct on my rating, reflecting as I type this, I almost want to knock it down even lower. Don't bother since there are plenty of decent to good movies out there waiting for you.
A slow paced witchhunt
My quick rating - 6,5/10. A sound and great looking movie that plays at the mind more for the horror aspect than it does with gore and loud scare moments. More of a thinking persons horror/thriller that plays out well in the atmosphere created. Even with the moderately short running time of just over an hour and a half, though, this movie seems to drag on quite a bit and may turn off casual moviegoers. Don't let that stop you from seeing a well rounded film that comes at a time where the more gore the better is the norm.
Overall worth a watch but I am slightly unsure what all the media attention was all about. I believe if it were not for this, then many would not have even known about this flick. Being supported by the Satanic Church was odd but effective for the media to jump on.
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
The queen comes to take Gantz??? back....
My quick rating - 6,1/10. Of course could not live up to the original, but at least they made it believable on the continuity. If you liked the first one (which many don't, I really did though) then you will be just fine with this one. Something was missing though, and that was what Will Smith brought to the first one. There just was no stand out character to get behind. Hirsch and Goldblum played their parts well again. The action was frenetic and most likely looked really good in 3- D. If you are expecting anything but a summer blockbuster, then you may have to pass, but for a popcorn flick, this works just fine. Oh, and the strange Gantz object being a part of this was very odd. Wonder how many times they saw that movie?
Yip Man 3 (2015)
Excellent example of how a martial arts movie is made
My quick rating 7,7/10. Even if you are not a fan of so called "kung fu movies" this is the type of film that will make you see past the punches and poor dialogue. The film is basically a tutorial in fight scene choreography from start to finish. Each move and counter is so perfect in both the physical action and the camera-work to bring it to the audiences eyes. Even with all the fighting going on, there is a story about an aging martial arts master of Wing Chun that is forced to stop a band of brutal gangsters led by a crooked property developer make a play to take over the city (IMDB). This of course leads to the ensuing fights to try and keep the town safe. Within this plot is a subplot that ends the movie as well when an unknown comes to aid Ip Man only to challenge him for the title of master. The version I watched had horrible subtitles, but even still some of the conversations made enough sense to see there were points about western police and going against government. So, yes, there was also an underlying theme to his movie. But lets be honest, we are watching to see Master Ip (played superbly again by Donnie Yen) subtly beat the crap out of everyone. Even in one scene given a fight where he is not allowed to punch 10 opponents, he is still able to keep them at bay. The fights all vary in style with the most unique but not necessarily technically the best, a fight to the end, 3 minutes timed with none other then Mike Tyson. Each fight sequence really is just poetry on the screen and must be seen. I personally have been looking forward to this sequel for a long time and I must say it has been worth the wait. Definitely worth seeing and I know I will be seeing again. In Fear (2013)
Run of the mill? Or something very different?
My quick rating - 4,8/10. I am not sure what people on IMDb are raving about. It may have been simple and to the point, or if you want to read well into this much more then exists, then sure, it could be phenomenal. Truth is I watched a marginal horror movie that was entirely too boring for half of it. The acting was not very good to hold so much of the film being just the two people in the car. I would give my opinions of what actually could've happened but there is no way to do so without giving spoilers. Let me just say, I really don't think this movie is much more then face value but only the creators could say for sure. Maybe someone will comment on IMDb to me and tell me if my "theory" about this is correct. If not, this is just a drive around lost with some bad guy harassing you every step of the way. Might be worth viewing if you want to get in the conversation of "What ifs"
Hai kikku gâru! (2009)
An infomercial or a showcase of the directors daughter?
My quick rating - 3,6/10. I honestly have no idea if this was an infomercial for a local Karate studio or a home movie. The way the movie focuses on the young girl who is the star is so obsessive it has to be the daughter of someone. But the annoying camera work that consists of more replays of moves than even the WWE packs into their programming makes you wonder what the point really is. And this isn't just a replay from earlier in the flick, this is the exact same move or moves shown a frame or two earlier throughout the WHOLE movie. I have to say that if all the replays were left out, instead of 85 minutes, the flick would've clocked in around 70 minutes. I would go into the plot, but there wasn't one. Basically high school girl kicks butt. Yep, that is it. Back to the infomercial possibility, I suppose this movie could be recruiting for someone and spreading the message of how disciplined martial arts are and great for kids (which is true, btw) but this film does a poor job conveying it. With all the great martial arts flicks out there this is a definite pass up on film.
Deadly Prey (1987)
Definition of so bad it is good
My quick rating - 4.7/10. Now let me explain. This movie is so horrendous it almost is unbelievable it even exists. If I were to rate this movie realistically and not for the sheer humor value, it would be below a 1. I don't think there are words to describe just how bad this is. Every aspect of filming is taken to its lowest level. The acting is terrible assuming it was acting. The death scenes are stupid and didn't even try the cheap route with gore. The blatant setup of the woman in distress running through a forest in a white tank top was even ruined with bad camera work so you don't even see the bouncing tits. A simple formula pointless thing like that and they couldn't even get that done right. Movies like this deserve their own category, rated as a movie and rated as a sham. Sorta like rating torrents, A/V quality as a cam opposed to quality as a rip overall (not that i would know anything about that). If you read this review to this point, the likeliness is you fall into the category of "you need to see it to believe it" and will find it for yourself. Long live the mullet and NOPE I won't be keeping this movie at all.
Riddle Room (2016)
Slow and boring psychological drama that builds to, um, nothing
My quick rating - 2,4/10. Slow and boring psychological drama that builds to, um, nothing. Glad it was only 80 minutes long. Woman wakes up in a room with no idea of who took her or why. With clues from the room, she must piece together why she is being held captive. This will lead the viewers on a mundane journey filled with boredom right up to the really stupid and ridiculous ending. I can't really comment about things such as acting, effects, camera work. They are all non-existent and the scenery is someones finished extra room built in their basement. Here is the part that I have to just type more for length and I don't really have more to say about this movie. I am talking myself into rating this lower so i'll shut up.
Shark Lake (2015)
Mix the love part and a better horror element and maybe....
My quick rating - 3,5/10. Really bad. I do appreciate the CGI swimmers against a underwater backdrop that has to be public domain video at this point. The movie is laughable to that level and the only shimmering glimpse of hope is the story? Did I really just say that? If you take away the stupid supposed horror element of normal sized bull sharks hanging out in a lake you actually have a somewhat interesting idea. The romance involves the dealer that sells exotic animals and something he lets lose in the water happens to have babies and is a shark. OK, dumb there, but when it is revealed for other purpose just seemed like the story warped two together since he did so to get back with his ex. OK, sounds dumb, but I saw a glimmer of hope, didn't say it was great. Either way, avoid this movie but maybe Jerry Duggan has something up his sleeve(if he hangs onto his screenplay writer) for something better.
