how horror should be done
Now, mabye categorising ring as a horror movie is wrong, as, on the whole, not much scary stuff happens. There is the one solid scare (and sweet jesus its damn terrifying) but the majority if the film is more like a Hitchcock thriller. No that this is bad thing, because the whole film is damn good, from start to finish (perhaps not the stereotypical giggly japanese schoolgirls at the start). I reckon a lot of people rate this film highly as it's Japanese, which makes it cooler and more artistic to us uncultured western swine, but either way it's worth seeing for that one fooking creepy scare, and makes it on to the list of the movies that have actually managed to scare me (without using the cheap bang loud music makes you jump trick).

Dread the Hollywood remake and cherish this nice little Japanese horror
The Beach (2000)
What the hell has Danny Boyle done?
He is one of the best movie directors in the business at the moment, with Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and A Life Less Ordinary all brilliant movies. So what went wrong with The Beach? It is a brilliant novel, had a great crew and a good cast of young and upcoming actors and a good soundtrack. But the movie was c**p.
I expected a lot more from it but it did not deliver, it also missed out one of the most important plot points, why Richard goes breifly insane. It fails to mention his obsession with Vietnam and computer games leaving anyone who hasn't seen the film saying
"WHAT THE F**K?!!!!!"
