Lead not believable as Roseanne (may contain spoilers)
Denny Dillon has an irritating voice but it's not the right irritating voice to play Roseanne. I just couldn't "get" her as Roseanne. Aside from the lousy dialog and the bad acting, it would have been okay if the actress playing Roseanne had actually been believable as Roseanne. I just didn't couldn't think of Denny Dillon as Roseanne. I could have ignored everything else that was wrong with this movie if only the lead had been believable. Oh well, I figured as much since I was watching this on Lifetime the channel for battered women, oops, I mean women. Blecch, blecch, blecch. I also disliked how they showed scenes from the present day and then flashed back to the past. In one particular scene (POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!), they flashed back to the sixties or seventies, and they had suddenly switched from using the actress playing "young Roseanne" to the actress playing the "current day Roseanne" except it was supposed to be the sixties and the actress playing the current day Roseanne looks like she's forty no matter what kind of hippie dress you put her in. Put we're supposed to believe that she's Roseanne in her twenties, ogling some guy who answers the door at some house in Colorado (or wherever she took a bus to, I wasn't paying close attention). And this guy is ogling her back, yeah right, he's ogling some forty-year-old frump in a muumuu. He couldn't even act like he was looking at a twenty-year-old, he was so bad.
Strange Voices (1987)
So bad I had to watch the whole thing
WARNING: SOME SPOILERS INCLUDED!!! Not a lot, but a few here and there, so beware!!!
Okay, first off, the music is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cheesy. Every time Nancy McKeon begins to hear voices/go crazy, the background music starts in and it's worse than porn music. The acting isn't particularly bad, it's just overly dramatic. Obviously, no one on the cast is actually schizophrenic because I don't believe the scenes that are in Nancy McKeon's point of view are an accurate representation of schizophrenia. Not that I would know from personal experience, as I don't have schizophrenia myself. However, I do know that cheesy music does not start playing every time someone starts hearing voices or perceiving the world as being "against them in one giant conspiracy". I know that the movie was made in 1987, but I didn't think 1987 was the middle ages of psychiatry but I guess it was. This was, after all, before Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and Zyprexa. The medications available had such many awful side effects, much more severe than the drugs we have available now. Perhaps that is why she throws her medication away and doesn't want to take it. I guess I should just cut the movie some slack because it was 1987 after all and what the heck did they know then anyway? But even if this movie was made today, the silly dialogue, the overacting, and the awful music are enough to make this the "Showgirls" of schizophrenic movies. But I had to watch the whole thing anyway. Just like eating a whole bag of Doritos, I was left feeling bloated, icky, and had a sticky orange coating on my fingers. Well, okay, there was no sticky orange coating on my fingers, but you get the picture, right? :)
I love Degrassi: The Next Generation
You don't have to be a teenager to like this show; I am 33 and I like it. Of course, I still remember what it was like to be a teenager and maybe some adults have forgotten. The fact that I don't have kids is probably the reason I am still in touch with my "inner teenager". Regarding the acting, I think that the acting is fine. They seem like real people to me. I like all the characters with the exception of Liberty & Toby; those 2 I cannot stand and wish they could be written out of the show. Those are the only 2 actors that I think are bad. The rest of the cast I think is great. I am totally addicted to this show! I have to find out what happens next and I think that is the mark of a good show. I look forward to many more seasons of Degrassi. I only hope the N stops censoring the shows for us "sensitive" Americans. We can handle it N, bring it on!!!
