Paris - When It Sizzles (1964)
Very Funny
A delightful dig at Hollywood without the claws. Very funny, undemanding entertainment at its best. I suppose that today such films would be called spoofs (might be a UK term?), but this has humour , innuendo and clever references to the actors themselves and the films they have been in. One to watch again and again to catch them all.
Erin Brockovich (2000)
Moving and funny
How close to reality this film actually is I do not know but taken by its own merits this is a very good film. A moving story superbly acted and well made. Bittersweet comedy abounds to keep a smile on the audiences' face. Delightfully free from over-acting and melodrama as so often plagues 'true-life' films.
Lake Placid (1999)
Surprisingly good
From the trailers compiled and screened in the UK, this was not a film I was going to go and see. As part of a group I went along and very glad I was too. Everything about this film is well done, from the casting and special effects to the direction and editing. All based on a very solid script filled with humour but without the over the top slapstick as in films like 'There's Something About Mary' and 'Cableman'. Its not a really scary horror film but does has its moments of tense 'knowing something is going to happen in a second' and any film that makes the audience laugh out loud through sheer enjoyment rather than embarrassment gets my vote.
Bicentennial Man (1999)
Robin Williams on top form.
A pure joy to watch. A comedy that doesn't resort to slap-stick yet still has the audience laughing out loud throughout is a gem worth prizing these days and one that can also make you cry is a find indeed.
This film rated P.G. in Britain should not be dismissed as a children's film, in fact adults will derive much more pleasure than many children from Issac Asimov's intelligent script and Robin Williams mastery of both comedy and drama.
Go and see it.
