Rakusho! Hyper Doll (1995)
A short but funny series
I took a chance, having never seen this series or read any reviews anywhere. I bought the series on laser disc, watched it and laughed wildly.
The series is another flying super hero scantily clad girls with powerup suits sort of anime series. But, the one thing I found interesting, is that the series is probably more funny for English speaking people. When I listened to Japanese speaking people trying to swear and cuss in English, I almost hit the floor from laughing so hard. The rest of the series is funny in terms of the gags and other pranks, and even more funny if you are an anime fan. It's not an anime classic, but, it's fun to watch.
Bishôjo senshi Sêrâ Mûn (1992)
A fun, playful magical girl series
Here is a show that starts out light-hearted and perhaps even a bit silly. The entire series is a sort of soap opera type presentation with a constantly building storyline right to the end. The season concludes however, with a very serious ending (I don't want to spoil the ending if you have not seen it). It has all the elements that a good story needs and the voice acting is very well done. Listen in the background for the background music and occasional song played during key sequences in the series for an audio treat. The thing that draws a potential fan to this show, is the complex storyline (spread out over 46 episodes), combined with the fact that perhaps inside you can rationalize with one of the characters (which is why fans of the show always have a favorite character).
Although the target audience for the show is aimed primarily at young girls, it seems to have gathered an audience from across the age spectrum, and far outside of Japan.
Gekijô-ban - Bishôjo senshi Sêrâ Mûn R (1993)
Naoko gives her characters a third dimension..
This is the first movie of 3 movies of the Sailor Moon series. It basically uses series information from the first 2 seasons of the TV series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon and Bishoujo Senshi SailormoonR.
In this movie, Naoko Takeuchi attempts to do something that perhaps she couldn't do with the TV series. She adds deeper brush strokes to the makeup and workings of the central characters of the series. Finally in the tearful ending of the movie, you find out how they all basically fit together as a team. Despite the sort of misfit characterization of each of the central characters (the Sailor Team less Sailor Moon), they all share one thing: A friend who is a true non-judging, very caring and emotionally supportive friend in Sailor Moon.
If you have taken the time to have watched any part of the TV series, including the english language adaptation and skipped over this movie, then you have done yourself a great injustice. If you enjoyed any part of the TV series, then this movie will not just be a must watch, but a must keep as well.
