Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Fun and mischievous
This film tells the story of a young man who is selected by Tony Stark to be the trainee Spiderman. As he is desperate to prove himself, he runs into more trouble than he ever imagined. Soon, he appears to be out of his depth.
"Spider-Man: Homecoming" reminds me of "Deadpool" because of its light hearted atmosphere, and Peter's mischievous demeanour. The fact that Peter is in observation and training provides a good background to the mischief, otherwise I think it might have proved to be a little annoying. Spiderman is not the almighty hero, but someone who has the potential to be. It is nice to see a cameo from Captain America, and it creates a seamless transition for Spiderman from a standalone franchise to integrating into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A thrilling film
This film tells the story of a woman who loses her son in a local park. She witnesses her son being taken into a car, and therefore she frantically tries to follow her car and get her son back. The chase is not as easy as it seems.
"Kidnap" is quite a thrilling film, with lots of high speed chases and dating moves. Halle Berry plays a desperate but determined mother, who will not give up on her son. There are a few moments when I thought her actions are unbelievable, such as not knocking the kidnappers down with her car in that grass field. These are just minor points though, as the plot keeps the thrill and urgency throughout the film. The ending is good as well. I enjoyed it.
This film tells the story of a young Korean girl who has a giant pig as her best friend. One day, a big American corporation takes her pig away, and she works with the Animal Liberation Front to save the pig from captivity.
The initial fifteen minutes or so is quite slow, and I almost lost patience. After the pig is taken from the beautiful rural setting, the film picks up significantly. The story begins a thrilling adventure for survival, and a heartwarming tale of love for animals. The animal rights subplot is touching and evokes much resonance in me. Jake Gyllenhaal is great as the TV personality, and it is so different from his recent roles such as "Southpaw". I enjoyed "Okja" a lot.
The Circle (2017)
A good thriller
This film tells the story of a young woman who gets a job as a customer service officer in a technology company that is known to be the best to work for in the world. Soon enough, she finds herself more than she hoped for in the all encompassing workplace.
"The Circle" is actually a lot better than people say it is. The story is relevant to every life of almost everyone, because the events portrayed are very likely to happen in the near future, if not already happening. It raises concerns on the technology companies on how far they can go to make life better, and what expense is the society going to make. I like the film a lot.
Baby Driver (2017)
This film tells the story of a young man who is an amazing driver. He is forced to be the getaway driver for a criminal mastermind, until he meets a beautiful waitress who likes music like he does. A heist then goes wrong, and his life is at risk.
I thought "Baby Driver" is a comedy, but it is also a crime thriller. The initial sequence featuring Baby and his love for music is very entertaining. It is quickly followed by a showcase of his exceptional driving skills. Then, the scene of him buying coffee is a long continuous shot, which deserves a mention. Many cool things happen is the film, and it is very enjoyable. The change in baby is quite a surprise to me.
The Zookeeper's Wife (2017)
A beautiful story
This film tells the story of a couple who runs a zoo in German occupied Poland. When the horrible persecution begins, they decide to hide Jews in their zoo to prevent them from being persecuted.
"The Zookeeper's Wife" is a very touching film. It is remarkable that they find enormous courage to help people they don't know, risking their lives many times in the process. The scene where their Jewish friend ask them if they are really sure if he can stay in their zoo, it is very touching because it is what is not says that is profoundly touching. It is a beautiful story with a beautiful ending.
The Calling (2014)
I recommend it
This film tells the story of a female detective in a quiet small town, who is addicted to alcohol and pills. Her great friend is murdered one day, and she sets out to find the murderer. Two days later, another murder occurs, and she is determined to get to the bottom of it.
"The Calling" starts off very slow, and I have to say I was about to lose interest in it. Fortunately, the plot turns very engaging soon after the second murder occurs. The puzzle presented here is certainly different from other crime films, which makes this film more captivating. Topher Grace is very good as a young policeman who is intelligent and dedicated. Susan Sarandon looks very good in the film, and I can't quite believe she is already over seventy. I enjoyed this film, and I would recommend it to others.
OK to watch
This film tells the story of a young journalist who discovers something sinister in a court transcript. He suspect that the local police is corrupt. As he digs deeper and deeper, he finds his life abs the people arrive him in increasingly greater danger.
"Edison Force" has a big cast, and most of them give strong performances. Perhaps I got a bit lost on the initial scenes, I could not tell who is the good guy and who is the bad guy initially. It took me a while to figure out who is who, so my enjoyment of the story is slightly hampered. Anyway, I admire the persistence of the young journalist. It is an OK film to watch, but it is not overly exciting or thrilling.
Once Upon a Time in Venice (2017)
A funny action comedy
This film tells the story of a policeman turned private detective, whose dog got stolen by a formidable drug cartel. He is determined to find his dog, no matter what price he pays and what method he uses to achieve his goal.
"Once Upon a Time in Venice" is about the crazy happenings in Venice beach, not Venice the Italian city. It keeps a light hearted tone throughout the film, and it keeps on being funny and entertaining. Hurdles keep getting into his way, but he solves them with relative ease. That's what a feel good comedy should be like. A good thing is that the plot does not get too ridiculous. Bruce Willis is good in this role, as he is tough but still got a comedic and sensitive side to the character. I enjoyed this funny action comedy.
A funny and delightful film.
This film tells the story of a hard working freelance computer graphic designer, who is skilled, responsible and dependable. He takes pride in not sleeping to deliver the work on time, but it affects his health adversely. He sees a doctor but the health advice is conflicting with his work schedule. He has to make a difficult choice.
I am surprised that the Tuesday evening screening of "Heart Attack" is full! I guess it is getting good word of mouth. The film starts off really funny. The whole cinema laughs hard on many occasions. I really like the fact that Yoon's thoughts are super funny. The sound effect is great as well. There is this one scene where uplifting music (that signals something is coming up) is suddenly stopped, creating a powerful effect.
The actors and actresses are great as well. Yoon is nerdy but really likable. The doctor Imm is charming as well. Je is really lovely too, and she is just such a supportive friend. I think "Heart Attack" is a funny and delightful film. I enjoyed it, and i am glad it is shown in cinemas in Hong Kong. I would not have discovered this film otherwise.
