In the original short story by Steven Lewis, the name DeeBees is short for "Dimensional Beings," since they travel through dimensional gateways.
Hank is voiced by Neil Kaplan, who also voiced the character Tychus Findlay, a Marine in computer game Starcraft series. Both Hank and Tychus wear a suit of armor with fast-firing rounds to fight against swarms of mindless creatures on planets far from Earth.
The aliens in this episode are called DeeBees. Reference to the game Gears of War 4: The hostile robot soldiers are also called DeeBees.
Beth assures Hank that the Miller family is on their way to help stave off the invasion. Tim Miller is the creator and executive producer for the series.
The scene where Hank, Jake and Crazy Mel march out in their mechs to confront the giant breach of incoming deebees is very similar to The Matrix Revolutions (2003), when the armed forces of Zion are gearing up to fight the imminent swarms of sentinels drilling down towards them. Not only do the mechs parallel the design and armaments of Zion's Armored Personnel Units (APUs) - but when the deebees are just about to rush through the breach, there is a brief sting of tense/foreboding music that is practically identical to the music that punctuates the sentinels first breach into Zion's main dock.
