It was obvious all along that Vance was not "in love" with Rachael. First of all how could anyone fall in love with someone they never met. Rachael was living in a fantasy world by even thinking this guy was going to "build a home together and start a family...whenever.
When Vance showed up I didn't believe anything he said about not having been arrested, and the 2 of them talking about possibly ending up together was a joke. No surprise the way it turned out.
