"I did my waiting, 12 years of it, in Azkaban" for the new adaptation AND IT'S AMAZING
LaughySaphy22 March 2020
I absolutely LOVE the new adaptation, it's gorgeous, the music is great, the characters are finally true to the original manga (oh my Shigure!!!!!) and it just gives you the feeling that the team working on it are all fans themselves!

Maybe I am a bit biased since I've been a fan of the story for the last decade, but I cried every single episode, even though I knew everything that was going to happen. It's astounding, I'm sooo thankful for this reboot and for finally getting the representation of Shigure and Akito that I deserve.

10/10.

AN ABOLUTE MASTERPIECE
elliemae-6527922 August 2019
No one can deny Takaya's original manga series, is absolutely marvelous. A timeless masterpiece, with dark undertones that get progressively darker as the series goes on. This is something that the 2001 anime completely failed to portray in every almost every aspect. 2001 was a bubbly, over the top, tiny portion of the actual story. I noticed someone in the reviews before stated that the 2019 version should have just picked up where 2001 left off. Well, if that person was a true fan then they would know that the 2001 version left out KEY ELEMENTS to the story that are VITAL later on in the series. So in conclusion, JUST NO. A reboot was absolutely necessary if you want the whole TRUE story to be told. And Takaya is doing just that, she is overseeing all of production and 20 episodes in, I AM AMAZED, not only with the animation, but with the subtle updates to this 20 year old story, and not to mention the way that they are switching story arcs around slightly to better express the on screen telling of this story. The music also is a lot better in the reboot- You can actually hear Yuki talking, something that didn't happen often in the 2001 version because the music was not only obnoxious, but way too loud. I am so excited to eagerly keep watching every week as Tohru helps people with her kind heart and words, not only in the series, but in real life too. I have always looked back on this series throughout my life and it has influenced a lot of decisions. I whole-heartedly recommend this to ANYONE, no matter your age or gender.

I can't express it in words... so
harrythewooldridge28 December 2020
This series is incredible and if you've seen it you'll probably know what I mean, and if not, I'll put it this way. if I had 3 wishes I would use one to be able to forget what happens in the series so I could watch it again for the first time.

Seriously I envy all those who are yet to view this series for the first time it's just that good, the secrets, the torment, the sacrifice, the barbaric nature of tradition, all the suspense that holds it together, and the way that enables relationships to be built. It's great.

Better than the Original Anime, More True to the Manga
rxnvaz11 April 2019
I read all the Fruits Basket manga as it was coming out years ago, and honestly only watched the original anime because it gave me quick nostalgia of the books but it definitely never really felt like a true animation of the manga. It lacked the depth and thoughtfulness the actual manga exudes in between periods of goofyness and absurdity. I am so glad they have remade the animation of Fruits Basket, I love the music, and it is much more accurate to what I read and fell in love with years ago. Finally an animation that gives the manga justice. I cannot wait to see more.

The Perfect Anime
natertateer29 June 2021
The perfect anime doesn't exist, until now! Whether you are a beginner or an anime veteran you'll enjoy this show. Fruits Basket has 3 incredible seasons based of the original Fruits Basket manga. A true Adaptation, fit with a high quality studio producing the show, and an outstanding soundtrack perfectly matched with emotional scenes sure to make you laugh and cry. While sometimes comedic this show exposes you time and time again of lives struggles, no matter the age. An all-around 10/10 available in sub and dub both fit with great VA's. Give this show and chance and you're sure to be stunned.

So true to the manga
lunalovegood56710 April 2019
I've only watched the first episode, but not only is the show more beautiful than the original anime, it's so true to the manga that you can follow the what the characters said in the show line for line in the manga. I'm really excited to see this show get the ending it deserved - the first anime was great but it did leave you hanging.

True to the Real Story combined with the charm of the 2001 Anime
taraegv27 April 2019
I have read the Entirety of the Fruits Basket manga a multitude of times. It is beautiful, dark, captivating. When I watched the 2001 anime I also fell in love with the new, brief, sugarcoated way of telling the story. However I have always desired the original story be told as it is and seen through till the very end. Oh the end. This 2019 remake is dead on and I couldn't be more excited To see it all unfold onscreen. Finally. The real story. And I love that most of the original voices from the 2001 anime are in it because I was already attached to the sound of those characters. I couldn't be more happy about this revamped Fruits Basket with the original tale. It's one of those things I never thought would happen and yet here it is Dreams do come true

It's Fluffy but also Good
jameshowlett-2745617 September 2019
I'm not really an avid watcher of anime but i saw the hype the remake got and thought hey I'd give it a try Oh boy it was so worth it The protagonist is probably the nicest character you'll ever meet. The way each and every character is fleshed out, the underlying themes and the feels.. It's a pretty good romance story and if you like slice of life you'd love this one

I enjoyed fruits basket before and I enjoy it now
meloetta-3865527 April 2019
I've read the manga and have seen the older 2001 version of fruits basket. If I'm being honest the 2001 version kind of left me disappointed I felt like they missed a lot from the manga and they didn't portray everything in the best way but don't get me wrong I still LOVE the anime. When I heard fruits basket was getting a reboot I was overjoyed! I have hope that they will stay truer to the plot from the manga and if you look at it this way , maybe it will get another season as well , the 2001 version stopped , where as in the manga their story had just begun you don't see the full depth in kyo and tohru's relationship in the 2001 version as opposed to in the manga. I've been watching all the newest episodes of the 2019 reboot and if I'm being honest I love it ! I admire the newer update in the art , I'm so happy that they used the same voice actors as the original, and I'm also glad that they are making sutle updates which make more sense to the viewer, it's also fun to rewatch . Overall an amazing anime and if you haven't I suggest reading the manga too both are fantastic . This may just be my opinion, that's okay but personally I really love the new reboot .

Amazing protagonist!
jonathanlindblom13 February 2021
The protagonist is super nice and the characters in general are interesting and well written. But the anime is super slow and almost nothing happens. We learn about the characters but other then that the story doesn't move forward in any meaningful way.

Alright Warning: Spoilers
When I watched the first production years before this reboot, I felt sad because I was feeling it and couldn't accept they had no budget to continue. It made me excited when I saw the reboot with a higher budget and many seasons. Unfortunately, it didn't leave the same impression because it is too long unnecessarily. They could have done 2 full seasons. You watch nothing but repetitive fillers. Things get serious on season 3 finally but even though there are tons of background stories of side characters and reviewers don't know why they need to know that since it is not related to the main story or characters.

Another problem is character development. While Kyo and Yuki look interested in Tohru, all of a sudden Yuki disappears from this live triangle in season 3. Instead of wasting time with side character drama, I rather wanna see how Yuki distances himself from Tohru.

I recommend watching all seasons together with Prelude but I don't think it is such a remarkable series that I'd watch again.

Love this reboot
h_hesselbach19 June 2019
I remember watching Fruit basket (2001), it only aired 26 episode. I'm glad they brought back some of the same voice actor who were in the 2001 version. I really hope that the reboot of Fruit Basket will go more than 26 episodes and trying to stay true to the Manga Series.

Better than the original, but it still has it's quirks
angelamarymartin21 November 2019
I'm a little torn as to whether or not I should give it 7 or 8 stars simply because there were a lot of things that it did better than the original 2001 anime did but there are also a lot of things that I dislike though they are mostly my own personal bias. I hate that Toru calls Yuki by his last name instead of by his first name and I hate what they have done with Momiji and the way he speaks. When it comes to Momiji that's probably just because my idea of what his voice should be like from the original anime but even so, that's just really hard to get over. Oh well, I'm only on episode 6 of the season (hopefully there's still more to come as this has and always will be one of my favorite mangas) so maybe things will even out.

it is ok
gsletteland14 February 2021
The anime overall is ok there is lots of interesting parts sometimes. aside from that, it is quite boring. there are lots of unneeded information and things that they add that don't even matter after. i feel like the series wanted to add as many episodes they could so they just added useless parts to it. don't get me started on the main character. tohru is so useless to this anime. she is the most annoying main character ever. all the other characters are great and filled with personality but the main one just didn't do it for me. every time i heard her talk it was just so annoying. in conclusion, the series was a waste of time. it was interesting of course but when you look at the bigger picture, it is boring and does not deserve the praise it is given.

Not an average romance anime, very different. I liked the ending, so since yesterday fruit basket is on number one spot let's see how much time it takes for FMAB fans to bring this down😔

Loving this remake so far
WeAreLive20 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Fruits Basket is an anime which is based off the manga of Fruits Basket and is a reboot from the original series.

For those who are wondering, you don't have to watch the reboot to understand this series, this series is pretty much a fresh new take on the franchise which fans have been demanding for years. However, the original is still a good watch IMO and I even consider it a classic, I also did a review on it last year if you want to check that out.

The plot is as follows:

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, 16 year old high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out...into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Souma clan, and it isn't long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Soumas have a secret of their own--when hugged by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

Truly, i love this series, it's just as emotional, just as funny and just as good as the original series was, and even better.

The music is really good, even though i miss Meredith McCoy and Laura Bailey's soundtracks to the original series. But music is really good regardless of intro or end credits. Heck even background music works in each scene, without going over top or inappropriate at wrong scenes.

Despite the Funimation controversy, I truly love the dub, it was nice that they got everyone back, heck even Laura Bailey. Even if some of the replacements were either hit miss or a couple of them should have been recasted in the reboot (Kisa Sohma) but I still love the dub and it is Funimation's best one in years.

Animation as well is a huge improvement over the original but I suppose as time moves on, anime does advance even if sometimes this isn't the case.

My though on this reboot overall is excellent, especially if you are a fan of the manga and the original series. Can't wait for season 2.

I have so much love for this anime
jasminn_tan5 August 2021
Fruits Basket is just.. a masterpiece. It's definitely become one of the most memorable shows I have watched this year. The characters were wonderful, all of them, but especially Tohru who was like a ray of sunshine piercing through thick dark clouds. I'm not ashamed to say that I've grown attached to these characters over the course of 63 episodes and I honestly didn't want to let them go.

The found family trope, the power of friendship and kindness, the strength of unwavering love between the characters. There were many things that this anime took time to highlight such as loneliness, neglect, bullying, etc and I think the way these issues were addressed and dealt with in the show is one of the main reasons why I love and have so much respect for this anime. Honestly, there were so many times I had to pause because I felt like crying. No spoilers but Momiji's backstory was particularly emotional (read: devastating) for me.

Also, I have to mention the character development in this anime because I truly believe that Fruits Basket has done it incredibly well. Everyone In Fruits Basket started out with some kind of emotional scar and tragic past that tied them down and over time, they changed and grew and realized things about themselves. The most important thing is that they healed. And in some ways, I also feel as if I have healed by watching Fruits Basket and I'm forever grateful for the creator of the manga that this anime was adapted from. And I thank the team that worked to bring this anime to life because they did an amazing job. I think Fruits Basket is definitely something that I will come back to time to time because it left me feeling so warm and happy in the end.

It's so beautiful
lisadewaal-9810420 February 2020
I watched the 2001 version of Fruits Basket like five years ago, and even though I enjoyed it, it didn't feel entirely right, especially the ending. THIS version, however... It's just beautiful. The animation is fantastic. The characters are all likable in their own way. The story is fantastic.

Another really interesting aspect of this anime is that it feels real. The things that happen, the flaws and struggles each character has to deal with, they're all rather realistic. I found myself crying actual tears in some episodes because of how the story hits home.

I also adore the message it sends. The main character is extremely endearing and if everyone would strive to be more like her, the world would be a much better place.

And finally, the English dub is very good. I watched the 2001 version with English dub as well, and I was surprised to hear that the entire cast is the same as back then! I love how consistent Funimation is, they have my greatest respect.

I can't wait to see the second season!

Begins like a Poignant Comedy then a story of salvation
bill_allison16 September 2021
This has been rated among the best stories and anime of all time. Powerful story with fine animation and terrific voice acting. Keep a box of tissues near-by. It begins like a high school comedy with wacky characters & funny situations. The heroine, Tohru Honda, is a girl who has survived many hardships, yet remains cheerful and kind. She moves from a tent into a home with the Sohma (alternately Soma) family. The story-line shifts into Therapist Mode, as she listens to people's problems and dispenses simple yet powerful advice. You may find yourself inspired! The Sohma Clan is an elite family, yet tortured. The Sohma begin to seek out Tohru, curious if an outsider can be so helpful. Dark secrets are discovered and serious dangers threaten. Can Tohru save the family from self-destructing? Humor, friendship, love, and life-threatening dangers are all present in this series.

Thoughts after 3 episodes
Protogeist27 April 2019
I don't know. I get why it's popular. People watched the old one and people love nostalgia. There's high school which will always work for the community. I just found it to be completely generic, boring and didn't have any flair. I might get back into it when it has finished, but I doubt it

It does NOT get better
wedmcdfcdjlbctenqn30 April 2023
So I just finished all 3 seasons of Fruits Basket. I liked the first season well enough, but didn't really see any reason for the high rating this show has received. I read online it builds up to bigger and better things in season 2 and 3.

It doesn't.

There are two (big) reveals which happen at the end of season 2 and the midpoint of season 3. One of them is really a "so what?" reveal, which really didn't seem as shocking as they were trying to make it. It just seemed convulated for no reason.

The other one one which comes out of nowhere. As in literally, as even the person who's secret this was totally forgot about it himself. It sounds dumb because it is.

And this secret really does not have the consequences it deserves. You really couldn't just grab somebody and push them away in the other direction......really?

The main antagonist of the show really is not threathening at all. There's absolutely no reason at all that anybody should be afraid or acting like a servant towards the antagonist. Even the smallest Zodiac member could literally kick that person's behind. Despite this everybody acts totally afraid of this person, and lets themselves be tortured to boot. For absolutely no reason.

The ending of Fruits Basket is downright horrible. There are literally no repurcussions to anybody who did something wrong. None. We just gonna act like it never happened and let's just all be friends. Power of friendship everybody! Woohoo!

The two male leads acting all non-loved and lonely throughout the show. Which changed when they came in contact with the female lead. One of them has a girl who wants to marry him and showers him with love since he was a kid. The other one has a literal female fan club for him at his school.....

That's the level of logic of this show. It's an ok series which makes you want to find out some of the mysteries you get shown early on, only to dissapoint you with the answers later.

Sweet, sad and uplifting all at the same time.
michaelmilesstimson13 September 2020
I can't compare this to the manga or 2001 series as I haven't seen either. My daughter introduced me to this series, we started at episode 1 and before long I was just as keen as she was to see the next episode. By episode 5 I was tearing up with Tohru as she struggles against genuinely selfless nature to put her own feelings first and Yuki and Kyo escort her back... the rice ball is finally picked to be included in the fruits basket!

There is a bit of fantasy about the zodiac Sohma characters which adds spice to the story but mostly it's about the interplay of the personalities and rising above circumstance; A delightfully interwoven series of subplots keeps this interesting and it's hard not to get invested in the characters. On one hand I can't wait to see how this ends, on the other I wouldn't mind a few more series before concluding, it's just that entertaining to watch.

There are a few scenes not suitable for very young minds but on the whole this story is suitable for children old enough to follow a complicated plot over a series.

Disappointed reboot
walkling-9438321 August 2021
Looked for to this since I first read the comics, but the first 1/3 that the original anime had has disappointed me. Much of the sly humor has been lost. The voice actors are the same for most the characters but some how sound slightly, but still noticeably different and the name pronunciations have changed. The biggest disappointment though was the lack of Shigure's involvement in helping Toru with Kyo.
