A wonderful Programme and a fine introduction to early music
This was a wonderful programme and contributed greatly to my interest in "early music". I later went on to direct such an ensemble myslelf.
It was presented by Clement Freud whose voice was perfect for the semi humourous script. Many of the big names of early music were featured and a few lesser known groups along with some who were to become far better known later. The Dolmetch family featured both in their own right and as supporting artists for the Beatles believe it or not!
Of course, the real star of the show, acknowledged by Freud at the end, was David Munrow, the founder of the. Early Music Consort of London. He demonstrated many instruments that at that time were known only amongst enthusiasts. The show ended with a performance of a piece "for multiple Munrows" a multi-tracked work with all parts performed by Munrow himself.
I recorded it from the television on a very old reel to reel tape recorder on a tape that must, by now, have deteriorated to nothing. I don't know if a video of this programme exists and is available. If it does, I would love to see it again - I haven't seen it since 1970. Apologies if my memories of it are innacurate.
