Darkness on the edge of town
BandSAboutMovies10 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In an abandoned house on an ordinary street, a gang of criminals hide out from a big boss who wants them to either pay up or die. Perhaps this hidden space is the place where they can grow marijuana and pay off their debt. The only problem is that the house may be using them more than they're using it, as it has a void within it that reaches out to each of them and replays the bad choices that their lives of crime have led to.

From the first frame -- a quote by Spanish philosopher Baltasar Gracian that says "Never open the door to a lesser evil, for other and greater ones invariably slink in after it." -- Gateway doesn't seem like the first full-length from director Niall Owen. It has more poise and willingness to slow burn. It's not a race to jump scares; the human horror at its center is the real star.

The true monster in this movie are the lives and choices within them of each character, moments that while enduring must now be experienced again, old wounds torn apart and not many can survive reliving such experiences.

Great filmography, boring as hell
matthewmillerwriter18 July 2022
The acting is great and the cinematography is great. The plot is incredibly boring and hard to make sense of. I am not even sure I would classify this as horror, maybe more like a psychological drama. Slow burn is one thing but geez.

Slow as molasses
killercharm24 July 2022
Slow as molasses tale of a gang who decide to take over an abandoned house to grow weed in. In an upstairs bedroom is a gateway to...somewhere hellish. There's too much build-up that doesn't do anything to heighten the experience; we don't know them any better, the better to care about what happens to them. Then there's too much silent watching. The mood is dark and dreadful, but that's not enough. It feels more like a crime saga, but still, one I don't care too much about.

Extremely slow and boring.
miss_toucan8 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert!!

This film is about a group of small time criminals who go to an abandoned house to grow marijuana crops there. It takes about 35 minutes of nothing before anything happens.

They go into the house, and each of them starts seeing things and they all go crazy and kill themselves and/or each other.

The end.

I just saved you an 1hr and 20 minutes.

You're welcome!

I can't help but think any 10 star rating and reviews are probably from people who are friends or family members of the cast or crew.

Another candidate for fast forward.
phil_consult17 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I could have given this movie a 3, but I gave it a 2 for making me stay awake through the first half hour. After that it was fast forward to find something, anything that was happening, and any trace of interesting. Granted, I could have missed something along the way, but I don't regret not knowing. The acting in this movie was decent, but that's where any good news stops.

mind-numbingly boring
Asylum_runaway29 September 2022
This has got to be one of the most boring movies i have ever watched. Literally, NOTHING happens. It's just talk, talk, talk...then minute-long shots of the faces of the actors brooding. There was one scene of a man staring at the camera with his mouth open. Then he talks around the house till he sees two other men taking drugs in slow motion. That went on for a solid 3 minutes. What the point of that scene was not even the director knows. Just an awful movie. This isn't horror. The only scary thing about this movie is the idea of having to sit through it again. You might be thinking, was there anything redeeming about this movie? Sure. It was filmed really well. But that's it.

Agonizingly sibilant sound, boring in all other regards
korskarngw20 July 2022
The thing that stands out most about this film is the horrible sound quality throughout.

Most times the sound design ignores important details about what is going on during a seen, but somehow manages to focus on unimportant things and add distracting, poorly recording sound effects to draw attention to them.

In almost every scene I could point out an example, it is a persistant problem that by the end of the film goes beyond distraction and becomes extremely annoying.

One example is a scene where they are sitting next to a wooded area on a sunny day. There is no background noise, nothing to go along with what is on the screen, just silence. Could this be a thematic design choice? No not really, in the next scene near the same location during a phone call, they add sounds you might expect like birds and light wind. However, the mix is bad even on those sounds and they just seem odd.

All in all the sound imo is the worst aspect of this film, it is just always bad. In many scenes the effects they use are extremely bright and sibilant, which is always annoying when sound production teams give no attention to this all too common problem. If you use cheap, generic microphones, take time to educate yourself on production techniques you can use to alleviate that weakness.

Ok rant about horrible sound is over, how about the rest of the film? Well, visually it is ok I guess? But to be honest it just has a really boring look to it most of the time. So while I might say the cinematography is competent (especially when compared to the sound design which is abysmal and I wouldn't even say amateurish), it is in no way compelling.

If you don't like the boring look, well don't hold out hope for the story or performances. Everything about the movie's story is just boring. The presentation is done in a way that it almost feels like the filmmakers want you to be bored.

If you like boring movies, give it a try I guess. If you dislike poorly done, sibilant sounds, skip this 100%. If you can literally think of just about any other way to spend your day, do that instead. IMO watching this movie is probably about as entertaining as reading this inexplicably long review.

Any chance of a laugh?
heratyplant20 July 2022
This type of the haunted house is gonna git ya story has been done so often, it's almost impossible to recall how many times I've seen it, here just given a miserable, suburban council house retread.

Assured cinematography & decent performances can't mitigate the terrible decision to make this a total misery-fest, with a cast of entirely unsympathetic characters & a sound track which would drive the most mentally sound to consider topping themselves.

The few horror elements that there were, missed the usual tricks to make the audience jump, this may have been the intention, to avoid overused tropes, but they were genuinely needed here, to help the viewer along. The gateway of the title, does indeed appear & does offer some intrigue, what, why, how etc, but it all comes to nought & we're left with no answers, thanks movie!

The fault here lies with the writer & director, single-mindedly making what they want, regardless of how this won't entertain the audience, you can make a dark, torturous ride, but you have to take the paying customer with you.

The Horror of Weed
EdgarST14 August 2022
The industrial products of Western cinema do not distance enough from bad movies made in Los Angeles and copy their manias, even though they tell stories that are not only unusual, but better than all the horror clunkers produced in California. Apart from my usual complaint about the abusive use of sound effects and music, «Gateway» is a good first horror feature by Irishman Niall Owens, with a very strange and ingenious premise: a group of marijuana suppliers (who bear little resemblance to marijuana growers who consume it at the same time) is looking for a safe place where they can sow, care for and harvest the "holy weed".

However, each one has a tragedy behind that is a load too heavy for them to carry. They are typical characters of the marijuana subculture and (disorganized) crime, immersed in an unhappy intrigue that contains some elements that we already know from other horror movies: settling of scores inside a haunted house, where creditors of life, ghosts in search of vindication and pale entities that control the space manifest themselves and interact with the living with dire consequences.

Everything comes to a fair and consistent end, thanks to the images created by Owens and his cinematographer Ger Murphy, which are sinister enough to unsettle us, even though it all happens in a day in broad daylight: the house is sunny, and the exteriors are bright. However, the filmmakers were not confident enough to minimize the manipulative sound and omnipresent musical score. This said aside, it is a highly recommended film, especially for those who like the genre... with a twist.

A modern classic of horror
wesleyvanauken26 September 2023
I didn't watch this one for a while after adding it to my collection. It was just another small budget horror thrown in the watch later bin. So glad I finally got around to watching this film. The camera work is good. Shots are beautifully set up. The characters are well developed. It reminded a bit of how Stephen King would always give you enough about the victims to care when he had the monster get them. A lot of horror tends to make the victims "deserve it" and that's what I thought I was getting here but instead I got was characters that while horrible, were also incredibly sympathetic. The writer made me care and that matters in good horror. The ending was very well done and over all I really enjoyed this movie. Some other reviews mention it being boring or slow, I found it was a very nice level of suspense but attention spans run short these days.

Definitely a keeper.

A good blending of two tales
brianstynes6 November 2023
The lo/no budget film is a business card for the director, if you scour youtube, you can find the early work of Shane Meadows and it was clear to anyone watching those one location, no budget short films that this director should be given the means to expand his stories, so rich are the characters and narrative.

Gateway could just as easily be so considered, this is the tale of a crew of petty criminals looking to break into the big time but choosing the wrong house for their plan, the characters are well fleshed out and dialogue sounds authentic coming from the individual players in the story. If I could point out just one thing for any future work, and this is completely subjective, something I wondered about while watching, would be the blocking, I felt that such an intricate meshing of two storylines would have been much more dynamic if the characters moved about a bit more during dialogue scenes, but as I say, completely subjective, they may have been static to add to the sense of powerlessness that they gang were experiencing as they struggled to get a grip on the supernatural happenings in their hiding place.

The intensity was extremely well executed, there is a very effective, surreal sequence where the main protagonist is unable to move as he witnesses his own history playing out in front of him, it really hit the mark, anyone who has considered their own historic deeds or words will identify with the scene.

Overall the film was engaging, believable dialogue, I'd love to see what Niall Owens could do if freed from the restraints of a limited budget, I'd say, watch this space.
