- DCI Taggart, a street-wise Glaswegian copper and DS Livingstone, a recent college graduate, are forced to work together after the discovery of a strangled young blonde woman's body by a jogger.
- Streetwise DCI Jim Taggart is forced to work with uptight college graduate DS Peter Livingstone after a jogger, Martin Inglis discovers the strangled body of a young, blonde woman in the river. Taggart is at first dismayed at having to work with Livingstone but gives in after his superior officer, Superintendent Murray, assures him it will be an easy case to solve. Their first port of call is Billy Dalgliesh, the victim's boyfriend who admits to having a row with her near the crime scene but claims to have left her there. Taggart doesn't believe him, especially after he tries to run but Livingstone does and eventually manages to prove his innocence when the victim's parents remember he called that night to apologise for the row seemingly unaware of her death. This puts even more tension in the relationship between the two policemen which is even further frayed when Taggart finds out that Inglis lied about his whereabouts on the night of the murder to cover up a sexual relationship he's been having with an underage male student. He turns him in which prompts Livingstone to accuse him of being a bigot. After clearing both Billy and Inglis, Taggart turns his attention to Alec McGowan, a convicted rapist now living low with his devoted sister Wilma and running the local general store. She claims that he was in all night but Taggart's not convinced. Meanwhile, Michael Boyd, a man who walks his dog near the crime scene every night acquires a morbid fascination with the murder case, collecting newspaper cuttings and spying on the police. Soon, however, all of Taggart's preconception of this being a quick, easy investigation will be shattered with the discovery of a second body. Also, a blonde young woman strangled near the riverbank.—Mateja Djedovic
